Mission or Goal of Unit
Founded in 1970, the Department of Family Medicine and Population Health at VCU has a long and proud history of training medical students and resident physicians. Our department houses all of our family medicine medical student education programs, including a highly rated clerkship and two longitudinal, four-year track programs. We have recently launched the VCU Health Community Memorial Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program with training primarily located in South Hill, VA:

The VCU Health CMH Family Medicine Residency Program began in 2024 with a mission to produce community-centered family medicine physicians trained to meet the broad scope of medical needs in rural and underserved communities of Virginia and beyond through real-world learning that promotes diversity, civic engagement, discovery, and innovation. The first year of training is centered in Richmond, Virginia and the second two years of training is based in South Hill, Virginia at VCU Health Community Memorial Hospital. The residency curriculum responds to the health challenges facing our nation, and creates leaders in healthcare that will transform systems to realize meaningful progress in health outcomes. The foundation of the residency program is the Family Medicine Residency Practice located a VCU Health Community Memorial Hospital Family Care Center.

The Inner City International Rural Program I2CRP is a 4-year longitudinal program for medical students who are invested in serving medically underserved populations. The mission of the program is to increase the number of students who choose career paths in primary care and who practice in underserved settings. The program enrolls up to 24 students per cohort or approximately 96 students during the M1 – M4 years. The preclinical curriculum includes didactics, journal clubs, grand rounds presentations, and service roles in underserved settings. The clinical curriculum includes second-year preceptorships in urban and rural underserved settings and clerkship rotations in urban, rural, and international underserved settings in Family Medicine, general Pediatrics, Ambulatory Medicine, and general Surgery. Students also complete a scholarly capstone project that is relevant to medically underserved communities.

The Family Medicine Scholars Training and Admission Track (fmSTAT) is a unique program designed to identify and select individuals who come to medical school intending to be family physicians. The four-year curricular track provides participants with tailored experiences that nurture, develop, and support this select group of medical students toward their family medicine career goal.
