Mission or Goal of Unit : The mission of the Department of Surgery is the pursuit of excellencein surgical care through constant innovation and education and to provide everypatient with the best care. This position resides in the Section of CommunityGeneral Surgery of the Division of Bariatric and Gastrointestinal Surgery atVCUHS. The primary location of practice will be Community Memorial Hospital inSouth Hill, Virginia, and the surgeon will collaborate with the main academicmedical center, VCU Hospital that is a Quaternary, Level I Trauma Center healthcare system, in Richmond, Virginia. Community Memorial Hospital has the intentto become a level III trauma center.
Chief Purpose of this position : This position is intended for a junior to mid-level,term,non-tenure track faculty position. The incumbent will provide support at thepractice in Community Memorial Hospital, a 70-bed hospital in South Hill,Virginia, as well as will integrate into the existing elective general surgerypractice and acute care surgery practice model with the option for criticalcare coverage as applicable. The practice incorporates community generalsurgical cases with laparoscopic, robotic, endoscopic capabilities. The facultymember will also support the division of Bariatric & GI surgery and AcuteCare Surgical Services with teaching responsibilities at the undergraduate andgraduate levels.
Position Responsibilities : Teaching
The faculty member will have teaching responsibilities as a part of their rolein an academic medical center setting. Oversight ofresidents and fellows aswell as instruction in General Surgery and applied anatomy andphysiology.
Clinical
Primary clinical responsibility will be in the care of general surgery andlow acuity trauma patients at Community Memorial Hospital as well as otherVCUHS clinics and operative locations. They will be responsible for thedevelopment of an active surgical practice, with the support of the Divisionand Department's leadership.
Research
Faculty member may participate in research activities and / or collaborate withothers on research projects and endeavors
Required Qualifications :
- Board Certification or eligibility in general surgery
- Commitment to teaching and education of medical students and other trainees
- Ability to work in a complex matrixed environment with a high emotional intelligence
- Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
