Job Duties
The Department of Environmental Quality, Northern Regional Office (NRO), is seeking a qualified candidate to assist in organization, development, evaluation, and implementation of regional water quality monitoring programs which includes conducting benthic macro-invertebrate/fish monitoring, overseeing probabilistic monitoring, conducting fish kill investigations, perform special study monitoring and evaluation & monitoring in support of Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) development and other agency commitments.
Minimum Qualifications
The successful candidate will have the following knowledge, skills and abilities gained through education and/or experience:
- Knowledge of aquatic ecology, aquatic biology, and environmental science
- benthic macro-invertebrate taxonomy and benthic macro-invertebrate sampling techniques
- fish taxonomy and collection techniques
- conducting Relative Bed Stability (RBS) surveys and Rapid Bioassessment surveys
- Ambient water monitoring collection techniques
- Ability to operate and maintain field instruments (water monitoring sondes)
- Effective verbal and written communication
- Proficiency in personal computer use
- This position may require you to operate a state owned or leased vehicle. Therefore, a valid driver's license is required
- Ability to regularly perform strenuous physical activity in extreme weather conditions
- Ability to perform heavy lifting (up to 50lbs)
- Will be required to obtain a Society for Freshwater Science (SFS) Genus certification within a year of hire
- Must obtain a Virginia DGIF boat operator safety training certificate and/or meet the licensing requirements in accordance with the Code of Virginia.
