Crater Health District, which includes the vibrant Cities of Hopewell, Emporia, and Petersburg, as well as the scenic Counties of Sussex, Greensville, Surry, Prince George, and Dinwiddie, is looking for passionate individuals to join our team in Environmental Health Services.

We are currently seeking entry-level Environmental Health Trainees to join our dedicated team. In this role, you will perform a variety of environmental health duties while receiving formal and on-the-job training. Your responsibilities may include:

  • Food sanitation
  • On-site soils evaluation
  • Private well inspection
  • Rabies abatement
  • Communicable disease investigation
  • Migrant labor camp inspection
  • Classification of shellfish growing areas
  • Investigation of general environmental complaints
You will be supported by close supervision and guidance as you learn to interpret and apply local, state, and federal regulations in the enforcement and monitoring of environmental programs.

As you grow in your role, you will have the opportunity to complete the necessary training in the VDH Soils, Food, or Shellfish programs, and obtain credentials within 18 months. Upon successful completion, you will advance to the Environmental Health Specialist Senior position.

Requirements:

A valid State Driver's License is required to operate a state vehicle or your personal vehicle while conducting agency business.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to communicate effectively with the public, internal/external partners and staff, proficient in basic computer software.
  • Knowledge and/or experience in assigned program areas, working knowledge of biology, chemistry, and/or mathematics.
  • Ability to access and walkover remote land parcels to read landscape position and topography.
  • Ability to provide direction to appropriate leadership in targeted areas, provide services in professional courteous manner, present education programs to adults; uses a customer-service oriented approach to assignments and works effectively as a team member.
  • Time management skills in order to meet workload demands; Skills in problem solving essential with analyzing information and making recommendations; Ability to interpret and apply regulations.

Additional Considerations

  • Experience in environmental health, such as experience gained as an Environmental Health Associate.
