Job Duties

The Violent Death Epidemiologist is responsible for carrying out a broad and moderately complex range of investigative and analytical epidemiologic activities in an assigned district, region, or within a statewide program area. Responsibilities include conducting epidemiologic investigations and/or assessments, participating in surveillance activities, conducting epidemiologic studies to include data analysis and dissemination, and consulting on scientific and technical issues.




Positions in this role may coordinate a specific epidemiology program within assigned area to include interpreting program policies and procedures, training staff, monitoring and reviewing data collection/analysis for accuracy and consistency, and serving as a program consultant.




Positions in this role work under the limited supervision of a lead epidemiologist, program manager, or similar position and perform assignments independently, making determinations about scope and direction of program planning, research and investigation, based on agreed upon direction and institutional review board approval, as needed.




Typically, the work completed is reviewed for feasibility, conformance to program policy and practices, and effectiveness in meeting specific goals and objectives.

May be required to perform other duties; may include functions in support of an emergency declaration.

This is a restricted position, which is solely funded by the CDC for a 60-month period ending 09/2029. The availability of funding is scheduled for review annually and periodically thereafter. Continued employment is contingent on the continued availability of funds.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge of database management; data quality assurance techniques and procedures.
  • Strong oral and written communication, interpersonal, problem solving, and database management skills.
  • Knowledge of advanced statistical analyses to include regression, descriptives, and frequencies.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage federally funded and maintained databases, such as the NVDRS.
  • Ability to independently collect, analyze, and enter data; perform data quality checks; report and reconcile discrepancies; prepare clear and accurate documentation and reports.
  • Must be able to travel within the state or nationally for meetings or other related events.
  • Knowledge of or experience in public health theory, principles, and/or qualitative and quantitative data methods.
  • Documented ability to work independently.
  • Detail oriented with strong organizational skills.
  • Experience writing data reports.
  • Must have the capacity to manage the physical and mental discomforts inherent to the work.
