Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Forestry (DOF) is seeking a GIS (Geographic Information System) Analyst to assist in our mission to ensure sustainable forest resources and healthy tree canopies across Virginia. The GIS Analyst will be responsible for providing analytical services for the development and maintenance of geographic data for DOF and partnering agencies / organizations. The incumbent in this position will be required to assist in the development and maintenance of relevant GIS vector and raster datasets, cartographic deliverables, and ArcGIS web applications that support DOF Program Areas including, but not limited to, Forest Management, Forest Health, Office of Working Lands Preservation, Urban & Community Forestry, Water Quality, and Fire Protection & Emergency Response.
Minimum Qualifications
- Working knowledge of the methods and techniques of, geospatial data collection, cartography, and geographic representation of the methods and techniques of map research, compilation, drafting, editing, and reproduction; of SQL database querying; and the use of computers, printers, and plotters
- Demonstrated ability to produce timely computer-generated cartographic deliverables, web applications, dashboards, and story map products using the Esri suite of products
- Knowledge of web-based GIS technology including developing and managing web services, ArcGIS Server and ArcSDE databases, SQL Server services
- Demonstrated proficiency and ability to use ArcGIS applications and tools effectively, including but not limited to ArcGIS Pro 3.4, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Enterprise 11.3, ArcGIS Dashboard, Experience Builder, Survey123, Story Maps, Field Maps, competency in Python and SQL database scripting, Model Builder, and remote sensing analysis
- Demonstrated ability for documentation of GIS environment, workflows, and metadata for geospatial layers; to organize, maintain, retrieve and use materials, automated maps, and other data accurately and systematically to work both effectively and efficiently with co-workers and DOF Program Areas
- Demonstrated competency in office practices, grammar, and professional report production and review
- Demonstrated ability to apply critical thinking to diverse vector, raster, and tabular datasets and produce logic-based analysis and recommendations on probable and potential trends and event outcomes
- Demonstrated ability to maintain accurate and complete files, manage multiple priorities, follow oral and written instructions, to communicate effectively both orally and in writing to convey technical and non-technical information, and build / maintain effective working relationships with all levels of personnel
- Must have a valid driver's license with satisfactory driving record
