Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Hampton Roads District, is seeking a Senior Structure and Bridge Inspector to perform in-service safety inspections of bridges and highway structures to discover damage, deterioration, and defects that would impair the life, serviceability, and safety of a structure. Prepare, approve and sign inspection reports, provide general condition and element ratings and make recommendations for deficiencies. This position requires the same qualifications as a NBIS Team Leader. This position differs from a Team Leader in that the Inspector Senior is not responsible for the overall management of a team, does not have supervisory responsibilities of other inspectors and does not lead a team on a daily basis.
The Core Responsibilities for the position include :
Update inventory records and maintain inspection files, forms, reports and maps of assigned areas.
Determine and demonstrate proper work site protection techniques. Ensure workplace safety by identifying workplace hazards and making suggestions for improvement. Wear proper personal protection equipment. Maintain current knowledge of safety rules, regulations, laws and procedures (OSHA and VOSHA, etc.). Ensure equipment is used properly and safely. Apply MUTCD for detours, lane closures, work zones, etc. Maintain clean, orderly and safe work environment. Follow VDOT safety regulations and practices.
Prepare inspection reports, provide general condition and element ratings and make recommendations for deficiencies. Review and approve inspection reports prepared by other inspectors.
Perform visual and tactile safety inspection of bridges and highway structures to discover damage, deterioration, and defects that would impair the life, serviceability, and safety of a structure. Perform scheduled routine inspections and specialized inspections such as scour critical inspections, final inspections of new structures, structures damaged by floods and vehicular collision, and inspections of fatigue-prone details. May serve as a Team Leader on demand as incumbent meets minimum qualifications as defined by the NBIS.
Operate and maintain inspection vehicles and inspection instruments.
Assist supervisor or manager with planning and scheduling bridge and structure inspections.
Provide training and guidance to other inspectors in field data collection methods and inspection reporting.
Required skills for job & position :
- Ability to work at heights, over and in water, in confined spaces, in proximity to heavy traffic, and in inclement weather.
- Knowledge of NBIS, federal and VDOT requirements related to structures and safety inspections.
- Skill in the use of bridge inspection instruments and access equipment.
- Ability to physically perform hands-on inspections of bridges and structures and use required equipment.
- Knowledge of bridge maintenance, repair and rehabilitation.
- Ability to communicate with others verbally and in writing.
- Ability to provide training and guidance to others.
- Skill in the use of computers and software applications to include MS Office and database applications related to safety inspections.
- Knowledge of routine to specialized bridge and structure inspection methods and NBIS, as well as structure inventory and assessment database systems.
- Skill in reading and interpreting bridge and structure plans.
- Knowledge of and skill in the application of engineering math.
- Knowledge of the types, function and use of structural components.
- Skill in rendering drawings and sketches using computer applications.
VDOT is an emergency response agency, and this position may be designated to support emergency operations during certain situations. As such, you may occasionally be required to work an assignment that includes hours outside the normal work schedule including weekends and holidays. All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Effective February 7, 2022, new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL from a Class B to a Class A, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.
Position requires unrestricted mobility, working in all types of weather, irregular terrain and standing for long periods. Work is completed in, around, and above water, and from varying heights. Must have ability to lift 100 pounds. Requires approved safety shoes, which is a reimbursable expense. Personal protective equipment is provided.
