We are filling positions for the Bethia, Beach, Powhatan, and Bon Air Area Headquarters. Additional positions may be filled from this recruitment package within 90 days from the closing date.

We are seeking experienced individuals interested in joining our team who are able to operate power tools and heavy equipment (chain saws, trimming and chipping machines, dump truck, loader, backhoe, gradall, motor grader, tractor w / attachments) and perform manual labor.

As an Operator Maintenance you will :

• respond to emergency roadway and severe weather events to prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other types of hazardous road conditions
• attend work zone training, prepare work zones and perform traffic control
• demonstrate proper work site protection techniques : identify workplace safety hazards, make suggestions for improvement, wear proper personal protection equipment, maintain current knowledge of safety rules, regulations, laws and use equipment properly and safely
• participate as a working team member performing manual labor including, clearing drainage, cutting brush, pot-hole patching, and fulfilling tasks required to complete road maintenance projects
• complete pre-trip inspections, perform preventive maintenance and operate power tools and light to heavy equipment.

Starting June 1, 2022, in addition to a comprehensive compensation and benefits package, a $3,000 sign-on bonus is available for qualified candidates. A 12 month tenure agreement is required.

VDOT utilizes a market-based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands."

Verification of work history, DMV records check, and a fingerprint-based criminal history check will be conducted prior to first day of employment. Pre-employment physical will be required, to include a drug screen for CLP or CDL holders. Safety shoes are required in performance of job duties, which are a reimbursable item.

NOTE : Employees hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. New Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL to a Class A from a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course.

The successful candidate will be required to successfully complete the Intermediate Work Zone course and obtain a DEQ Land Disturber Certification within 6 months of employment.

VDOT is an emergency response agency. This position is essential requiring you to work in emergencies, to include weekends, holidays, and after normal business hours; assignments may vary based on business needs to include working in severe weather.
