Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is seeking an effective Program Manager to lead the Office of Meat and Poultry Services. This program ensures the production of safe, wholesome, and truthfully labeled meat and poultry products by providing inspection service to individuals or companies that slaughter and / or process meat and poultry products. Responsibilities include directing the statewide meat and poultry services program; supervising program staff achieve expected results; administering program resources effectively; promulgating program policies and procedures; serving as liaison with USDA Food Safety Inspection Service; and interpreting and enforcing laws and regulations. The job duties of this position require frequent travel throughout the Commonwealth. Once onboarded, this position may be eligible for telework opportunities; availability, hours, and duration of telework shall be approved as outlined in the Commonwealth's telework policy.
Minimum Qualifications
Considerable knowledge of meat and poultry inspection or food safety and the applicable laws and regulations. Familiarity with administrative policies, procedures and business practices as related to human resources, finance, procurement and budgeting. Strong administrative and program management skills, coupled with proficiency in computer applications. Proven ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to interpret and apply rules and regulations; to manage significant responsibilities with initiative and sound decision-making; and to work independently. Expertise in overseeing a statewide program, supervising a geographically dispersed team, and providing effective leadership, coaching, and, when necessary, addressing disciplinary matters. Demonstrated success in fostering teamwork and creating customer service-oriented programs and processes. Supervisory experience in a regulatory or related work environment. Must have and maintain a valid driver's license and a driving record that reflects a sense of responsibility for highway safety. H.S Diploma / GED required.
Additional Considerations
A degree in agriculture, food science, or a related subject such as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine is preferred. A combination of related education, training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills, and abilities to include knowledge of agriculture, food science, or a related subject.
