Job Duties

Norfolk State University (NSU) is a Historically Black University located in the city of Norfolk, Virginia. The NSU campus enrollment is approximately 6,000 students, and the campus has a rich tradition of undergraduate teaching and research. The College of Science, Engineering and Technology in NSU now features a growing focus on emerging areas in science and technology, and the Engineering department was established in 2002 as a separate program. Today, the Engineering department offers a BS and MS degree, and the Engineering department faculty supports the PhD degree in Materials Science and Engineering program. The fall 2024 Engineering program enrollment is approximately 150 students.

The HBCU CHIPs Network is a collaborative effort, involving Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), government agencies, academia, and industry, that will serve as a national resource for semiconductor research and education. Through a multidisciplinary

approach, the Network will facilitate research innovations, resolve long-standing disparities in facilities, build domestic capacity, provide shared accessibility across Network stakeholders, and broaden participation in the microelectronics workforce. The Network objective is to advance leadership in microelectronics technology by leveraging the collective research expertise, capabilities, infrastructure, and core competencies of HBCUs. Activities address the design and fabrication of chips at various HBCU institutions, including semiconductor packaging using composite materials of polymer and boron nitride nanotube composites. To cultivate a diverse and skilled workforce for the national semiconductor industry, the Network supports student research and the development of specialized curricula in semiconductor design, fabrication, and related fields, along with internship and research opportunities in collaboration with industry partners.

In addition, this position will support a consortium of nine academic institutions and eight industries to provide classroom studies and hands-on training that meet the unique needs of military service members and veteran students, whether they are looking to advance

within the armed forces or transition into the civilian sector. This opportunity has arisen to employ a Research Assistant Professor, through the National Science Foundation (NSF) funded project of the INCLUDES and Microelectronics and Nanomanufacturing Certificate

Program (MNCP). The appointment is available from the 1st of Nov. 2024 and for a period of 24 months and can be continued depending on funding availability.

The successful candidate will join a cohesive group in INCLUDES and MNCP centers in nationwide and be responsible for 1) performing research for advanced packaging materials, prototyping, and manufacturing; and 2) training in cleanroom and developing

training materials for nanofabrication technology. Key responsibilities of the position are below :

  • Developing composites of organic and nanomaterial for semiconductor packaging
  • Characterizing electrical properties of semiconductor materials impacted by proton

irradiation

  • Data analysis of radiation effects
  • Development of learning modules for nanofabrication processes
  • Providing lectures or training for nanofabrication processes
  • Support in the supervision of undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Prepare project reports, scientific papers and technical presentations.
  • Minimum Qualifications

  • The candidate must have a PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering,
  • Materials Science, or a very closely related field.

  • The applicant must demonstrate experience in nanocomposite materials, electrical characterization of semiconductors,
  • and semiconductor fabrication processes.

  • The applicant should be able to communicate and mentor a diverse student-body of undergraduate and graduate students, work in
  • collaboration with members of the HBCU CHIPs Network and MNCP team, and have the capability to work independently
