Job Description

Reporting to the University's Associate Vice President for Security and Identity, the cyber range director is responsible for all aspects of budget, personnel, operations, and logistics to ensure that the cyber range meets its mission to provide infrastructure, courseware, and outreach to students and faculty in Virginia public high schools and colleges.

The director is responsible for building and maintaining relationships with stakeholders in the Virginia state government, as well as cybersecurity educators and administrators in high schools, colleges, and universities in the Commonwealth of Virginia, to further the mission and goals of the Virginia Cyber Range.

This role also serves as director of the U.S. Cyber Range, a Virginia Tech service center, and is charged with establishing business goals, optimizing financial operations, and effectively directing the operational budget following university policies regarding the operation of a service center. The director also establishes and nurtures relationships with partners in government, industry, and academia to advance nationwide cybersecurity education.

The director should exhibit the ability to provide leadership based on university priorities for technology outreach, and to work effectively with both technical and non-technical staff, as well as with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse environment. The director is responsible for stewardship and leads strategic planning for the Virginia Cyber Range and U.S. Cyber Range.

Required Qualifications

  • Masters' degree or higher in Cybersecurity Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Business Information Technology, or other cybersecurity-related discipline
  • Strong working knowledge of technology security concepts such as physical security, risk management, business recovery and continuity, application security, access control, network intrusion detection, digital forensics, cybersecurity incident response, and various other security-related areas
  • Demonstrated background in budget planning and fiscal management
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication skills, including demonstrated written and public speaking experience
  • Demonstrated ability to work in an academic environment with students, staff, and faculty to promote success
  • Strong understanding of software program management and experience leading a large-scale software development effort
  • Familiarity with aspects of academic courseware such as the organization of course syllabi, lesson plan formats, and content delivery methods
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully handle sensitive discussions, strong personal ethics commitment, and demonstrated sound judgement

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience teaching a college-level course in a STEM discipline, such as cybersecurity, computer science, or information technology
  • Experience participating in and hosting cybersecurity competitions such as Capture-the-Flag
  • Background supporting cyber security operations
  • Background supporting cyber security research
