The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is responsible for building, maintaining, and operating the state's roads, bridges, tunnels, and ferries. Through the Commonwealth Transportation Board, it also provides funding for airports, rail, and public transportation. Virginia has the third largest state-maintained highway system in the country covering 58,321 miles of interstate, primary, secondary and frontage roads. VDOT has about 7,500 employees making it one of the largest state agencies in Virginia delivering a program that exceeds $5 Billion.
The Salem District maintains more than 9,200 miles of roads in southwestern Virginia in the counties of :
Bedford, Botetourt, Carroll, Craig, Floyd, Franklin, Giles, Henry, Montgomery, Patrick, Pulaski, and Roanoke. The district serves more than 650,000 citizens in these counties and the 14 cities and towns in its boundaries.
The position will manage an equipment repair shop, direct the maintenance and repair of equipment used for highway maintenance and construction and emergency operations. Schedule and direct activities of equipment repair technicians performing diagnosis, service, repair, inspection, and maintenance of a wide variety of vehicles and light, medium, and heavy duty equipment. Prioritize equipment shop workload based on customer requirements, parts availability, and manpower. Outsources work when required to meet needs. Interface with MANCON and jointly work to ensure Integrated Supply Storeroom is stocked to support fleet maintenance and repair needs.
VDOT is an emergency response agency and this position is key to fulfilling this agency requirement, and this position will be called upon to work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations such as inclement weather, flooding, and / or traffic incidents.
Minimum Qualifications
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
- Ability to operate various types of equipment.
- Knowledge of federal, state environmental and safety regulations related to fleet management.
- Safety shoes required.
- Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
- Considerable knowledge of general shop practices. The maintenance, inspection, repair of vehicles and light, medium, and heavy-duty equipment.
- Knowledge of supervisory principles and policies.
- Skill in the use of computers, hand and power tools, and advanced electronic and computerized diagnostic equipment.
- Ability to research, evaluate data, prepare and maintain records and reports.
