Virginia Western Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education operating under the Virginia Community College System, a statewide system of community colleges. The College operates under the policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Virginia Western Community College Local Advisory Board.
Virginia Western is located on a 70-acre campus in southwest Roanoke, VA. The service region of the College includes Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County, Craig County, Franklin County, and southern Botetourt County. The College was established in 1966 and has grown from an initial enrollment of 1,352 to its current annual enrollment of over 9,000 students in credit courses and more than 1,400 enrollments in fast-track workforce and continuing education courses
Virginia Western Community College, located in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains of the Roanoke Valley, is accepting applications for part-time Heavy Equipment Operator Instructors in the School of Career and Corporate Training (previously called Workforce Development). The position's responsibilities include instructing students in heavy equipment operation and performing both lecture / simulation in a classroom setting. The successful candidate will be required to be trained by a National Center for Construction Education & Research (NCCER) Master Teacher, use the NCCER Heavy Equipment Operators Curriculum and participate in program assessment. This position requires regular computer use, including Microsoft Office and online computing / curriculum applications. This position will also assist in all other instructor related duties to support the program and the CCT department.
Adjunct faculty positions are appointed on an as needed, course-by-course, semester basis.
Minimum Qualifications :
A minimum of 4 years of experience as a heavy equipment operator, operating modern heavy equipment used in the construction industry. Experience with preventative maintenance, safety, soils, print reading, grade work and supervision. Experience using computer software, such as Microsoft Word and Excel, as well as online applications.
Must complete the applicable National Center for Construction Education & Research (NCCER) training and credentials in CORE and HEO Level 1 within 3 months of hire.
All Adjunct Faculty positions require excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills; ability to write syllabi and exams; ability to develop learning strategies, curriculum and assessments; as well as the ability to work with students of varying abilities from diverse backgrounds.
Additional Considerations :
Experience training on Caterpillar Simulators is preferred. Experience training on equipment operation at off-campus sites with heavy equipment is preferred. Associate's degree in a Career and Technical Education field preferred . NCCER or related credentials preferred. OSHA 30 for Construction preferred. Classroom HEO instruction experience, providing instruction in accelerated formats geared towards certification exam preparation. Demonstrated track record of high level of student credential and institutional outcomes with the ability to deliver instruction in the classroom and in lab environments. Experience using CAT simulation software and Learning Management Systems such as Canvas.
