Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) protects the public by preparing court-involved youth to be successful citizens. DJJ is committed to excellence in public safety by providing effective interventions that improve the lives of youth, strengthening both families and communities within the Commonwealth.
The Department of Juvenile Justice is seeking a Training and Development Specialist to support training and development initiatives by delivering, and / or supporting various training and development interventions dedicated to the development of Juvenile Correctional Center employees, in order to assist the facility in the implementation of effective practices to meet the organizational objective through the improvement of workplace practices of employees, meet certification requirements, and ensure effective security practices in order to improve outcomes for youth. This position is critical in the agency's ability to hire, develop, and retain a highly proficient workforce by providing required training to current and future employees.
This agency is currently approved to work a hybrid telework schedule with four days in the office and one day of telework.
Minimum Qualifications
- Knowledge of adult learning methods; working knowledge and demonstrated skills in day-to-day correctional, detention, or jail operations;
- Knowledge of secure residential juvenile justice programs and practices (i.e. behavior management, interventions, program implementation), and safety and security practices, procedures, regulations, techniques, and equipment;
- Demonstrated ability to follow lesson plans; plan, coordinate, and deliver training courses; to organize and schedule work; and to coordinate and deliver facility-based on-the-job training;
- Ability to work from a secure facility and travel to the Training Unit on a regular and consistent basis, to deliver or attend training, coach and / or monitor implementation of training, and attend meetings;
- Must be able to adhere to state travel reimbursement guidelines; adjust to the changing needs of the organization; interpret and apply agency and unit policies and procedures; to respectfully and professionally communicate verbally and in writing at all levels, and provide exceptional customer service;
- Must meet certification requirements for use of force (Handle with Care) instructor and Red Cross (CPR / AED) instructor, as well as, regularly demonstrate and perform the physical requirements;
- A valid driver's license is required.
