Job Duties

The successful candidate will assist in the preparation of official advisory opinions and oversee the publication of the Annual Report of the Attorney General. Opinions assistance includes conducting legal research and drafting opinions across legal subjects as well as reviewing others’ drafts for substantive accuracy and editing them as necessary for style, clarity, and proper citation. Annual Report oversight includes collecting and editing materials provided by other Divisions, creating a comprehensive opinions subject index, and working with publishers to ensure timely publication. Additional duties include special research and writing projects, legislative bill reviews, and Opinions files maintenance. In helping public officials throughout the Commonwealth execute their duties, this position presents a unique and exciting opportunity for exposure to a broad range of legal fields and to government operations, as well as ability to work with other OAG staff across Divisions.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current admission to the Virginia State Bar or admission within one year required.
  • Ability to conduct legal research across a variety of platforms, both print and digital.
  • Superior writing, grammar, and proofreading skills.
  • Exceptional attention to detail.
  • Ability to organize work, meet deadlines, and adjust to changing priorities.
  • Ability to maintain good interpersonal relations and communications with other attorneys and support staff as well as effective working relationships with government officials, vendors, and the general public.

Additional Considerations

Prior clerkship, law review, or local government experience is a plus, but not a requirement.
