General Description: The Associate Instructor position will teach courses in Geology. Full-time teaching faculty are responsible for teaching various courses in the designated discipline/field of study. Teaching will potentially be in a variety of formats including face to face, remote, and online. The Associate Instructor position is a restricted appointment with an instructional load of 39 credits over the academic year. This position is relieved of most administrative and governance duties to spend time in student support and student success related activities. The Associate Instructor is a restricted position, and the contract contains no expectation or guarantee of continued employment.
Duties and Tasks: The primary responsibility of an Associate Instructor at Northern Virginia Community College is to provide quality instruction for the students. The major emphasis is on excellent teaching. Faculty help students develop their interests and abilities to their fullest capacity to become better workers and better citizens.
Essential Functions: As a part of this primary responsibility, the College expects each faculty member to meet assigned classes regularly; submit required records and reports routinely; teach the prescribed courses of study with the established texts; conduct virtual student conferences as needed; and adhere to the statement on professional ethics in accordance with college policies, procedures, and regulations. Faculty are also expected to maintain current competence in the particular discipline or field of specialization.
Employees must reside in DC, Maryland or Virginia.
Special Assignments
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

- Ability to effectively teach online classrooms and labs
- Experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment as a faculty member at NOVA.
- Master’s Degree in the teaching field or appropriately qualifying field, OR a master’s degree with a minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in Geology. Qualifying degrees and/or coursework must be awarded by/completed with a regionally accredited institution.
Additional Considerations
- A PhD in Geology or appropriately qualifying field.
- Experience in hybrid or online classes.
- College level teaching experience and/or relevant work experience.
