Reynolds is one of the largest community colleges in Virginia and serves Virginia’s capital city and five nearby counties. Annually, our four campus sites serve approximately 13,000 credit students and provide training for 7,400 students through the Community College Workforce Alliance. The Library Specialist creates and maintains access to the library’s scholarly materials through the creation of cataloging records using current bibliographic metadata standards. This position will primarily work with the library’s physical materials (books, audio/visual) and the materials processing workflow. Other duties will include: provide daytime research assistance to students, faculty, staff and community members; collaborate with faculty to provide targeted resources for students through information literacy initiatives & outreach; participate in collection development including purchase recommendations and weeding; and assist with special projects as assigned.

Job Duties
- Create original cataloging records for new physical library materials, coordinate materials processing workflow, serve as the library’s cataloging expert whenever needed, create and update cataloging documentation, work on special projects such as transfers or withdrawals, add items to the Reynolds Collection (archives), and generally maintain and increase the quality of the catalog’s bibliographic data.
- Provide in person, email, and virtual research assistance to students, faculty, staff and community members using library databases, open web resources, citation tools and other apps.
- Develop and teach information literacy including workshops and scavenger hunts in person and via Zoom.
- Serve as an embedded librarian in Canvas, the college’s learning management system.
- Create and update research guides, handouts, worksheets, and blog posts.
- Develop and maintain the library’s collections for curriculum support by recommending purchases for books, periodicals and library databases as well as weeding outdated materials from the library shelves.
- Provide technical support to students, faculty, staff and community patrons in the use of MS Office, our Canvas learning management system and our PaperCut printing system. Complete special projects as assigned.
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's/Required Qualifications
- At least one-year experience working in a library with cataloging.
- Ability to create original cataloging records according to current metadata standards using Alma, OCLC, and other applications;
- Employ best practices to support archival collections;
- Update and create metadata and cataloging documentation;
- Provide in person, email, and virtual research assistance to library patrons; develop and teach information literacy; create materials for library patrons; develop and maintain library collections;
- Provide technical support to library patrons;
- Communicate effectively and work as a team member.
- At least one-year experience working as an academic librarian.
- Experience using Alma, Canvas, Zoom, LibGuides and LibAnswers.
