Mountain Gateway Community College (MGCC) is a two-year public institution of higher education and one of 23 community colleges in Virginia. The Role

As the Lab School Director and Faculty member, you will play a pivotal role in the success of our IT programs. You will be responsible for both the administrative oversight of the Lab School and the delivery of engaging and effective instruction. This dual role allows you to shape the learning environment from the ground up, ensuring students receive a comprehensive and industry-relevant education.

Lab School Director Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership: Report directly to the Vice President of Academic Affairs, providing strategic vision and leadership for the Lab School's growth and success.

Operational Excellence: Oversee the day-to-day operations of the lab school, including comprehensive responsibility for scheduling, budgeting, and efficient resource management.

Industry Engagement: Cultivate and nurture strategic partnerships with local businesses and industry leaders to provide students with unparalleled exposure to real-world applications and career opportunities.

Testing Center Management: Implement and oversee the Pearson VUE testing center, ensuring its smooth operation through effective scheduling, budgeting, and resource management.

Conducive Learning Environment: Provide effective leadership and management of the lab school to ensure a conducive and stimulating learning environment for all students.

Innovative Teaching Methods: Design and implement innovative teaching methods, incorporating hands-on activities and real-world projects, to engage students and cultivate a genuine passion for information technology, cybersecurity, IT technical support and cloud computing.

Staying Current: Collaborate with faculty and industry experts to stay abreast of the latest technological advancements and industry trends, ensuring our curriculum remains cutting-edge.

Program Alignment: Collaborate closely with the Information Systems Technology Program Head to ensure seamless alignment between lab school activities and the overall program objectives.

Technology & Equipment: Guarantee the consistent availability and flawless functionality of all necessary technology and equipment within the lab environment.

Continuous Professional Development: Engage in continuous professional development to stay abreast of emerging trends in information systems technology and education, expanding your expertise and enhancing your teaching capabilities.

Community Engagement: Serve as a key liaison with local school administrators, principals, and counselors to promote the college's programs and pathways.

Experiential Learning: Develop and lead enriching field trips and experiential learning opportunities to enhance student learning and provide practical, real-world context.

Teaching Duties

Instruction: Teach approximately nine credit hours in cybersecurity, IT Technical Support, and AWS cloud computing, utilizing both theoretical and practical teaching approaches.

Hands-on Learning: Facilitate dynamic hands-on lab sessions to reinforce theoretical concepts and provide students with practical skills.

Student Support: Monitor and assess student progress, providing constructive feedback, guidance, and support to help them succeed.

Industry Preparation: Prepare students for industry certifications, ensuring they are well-equipped to enter the workforce and thrive in their chosen careers.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA's/Required Qualifications

Master's degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, or a related field OR a master's degree plus 18 graduate credit hours in Information Systems, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, or a related field (subject to review, industry certifications may be substituted for graduate credit hours)

DENTAL AND VISION BENEFITS Dental coverage provides preventative, diagnostic, and restorative care as well as orthodontia services. As a subscriber with The Commonwealth of Virginia, your dental benefits are administered by Delta Dental of Virginia. Vision insurance is included with all medical health plans.

EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (EAP)All employees have access to the employee assistance programs (EAPs) regardless of their healthcare enrollment.

FLEXIBLE SPENDING ACCOUNTS Enrolling in a health and/or dependent care flexible spending account (FSA) allows employees who are health plan members to set aside part of their salary on a pre-tax basis each pay period to pay for certain out-of-pocket expenses. You can use a health FSA to pay for medical, dental, and vision care expenses not covered by your health plan. A dependent care FSA can be used to reimburse eligible child-care or dependent self-care expenses. FSA Source Book

RETIREMENT PROGRAMS

Faculty members can choose between two retirement plan options: a defined contribution plan or defined benefit plan. The Optional Retirement Plan is a defined contribution plan where vesting is immediate for the employee. This plan is portable, meaning the employee can withdraw or roll over all funds into another qualifying account. The other option available is a defined benefit plan, also known as a pension plan, through the Virginia Retirement System (VRS). The vesting period for this plan is five years. Both plans have a mandatory 5% pre-tax contribution of employee's salary

per pay period.

LIFE INSURANCE Group Life Insurance Plans Upon employment, full-time Classified employees, Teaching Faculty, and Faculty Administrative Professionals are automatically enrolled in a group life insurance policy at no cost to the employee. This plan provides natural death, accidental death, and dismemberment coverage. Coverage is the equivalent of two times the employee's annual salary for natural death and four times the employee's annual salary for accidental death. Optional Life Insurance Plans State employees are eligible to apply for optional life insurance coverage to enroll themselves, spouse, and/or eligible children. The employee pays the premiums.

DISABILITY

Virginia Sickness And Disability Program (VSDP)

Teaching faculty who choose to participate in the VRS defined benefit plan are covered by the VA Sickness and Disability Program which provides eight (8) days of sick days annually, personal/family leave, short-term disability, long-term disability and long-term care insurance with 100% of the premiums paid by the state. The leave year runs January 10 - January 9. To be eligible for short-term disability benefits, employees must satisfy a one-year waiting period. Once eligible, the program provides income replacement for up to 125 workdays. The level of income replacement is based on years of state service. Long-term disability eligibility needs to be approved after the

conclusion of short-term disability coverage. The standard income replacement level is 60% but could go up to 80% for catastrophic conditions. Long-term care is a benefit provided to you when you cannot perform at least 2 everyday activities of daily living. Additional information is provided at hire.

Long-Term Disability For Optional Retirement Plan Participants (ORP)

Teaching faculty members who choose to participate in the defined contribution ORP plan can purchase Long-Term Disability from the VCCS Group plan provided through UNUM. Additional information is provided at time of hire.

TUITION ASSISTANCE Education Benefit Program MGCC encourages its employees to take the initiative in promoting their professional and scholarly growth. The Education Benefits Program is a discretionary fringe benefit provided by the college. Eligible employees will receive a tuition waiver for up to six (6) credit hours per semester excluding summer.

LEAVE PROGRAMS

Sick Leave For Optional Retirement Plan Participants (ORP)

Teaching faculty members who enroll in the ORP participate in the traditional sick leave plan and accrue at the rate of four and one-half ( 4 ½ ) days per academic semester, awarded on the first day of each semester.

Leave

Teaching faculty do not receive annual leave. However, teaching faculty not participating in VSDP receive 3 (three) days of personal leave at the beginning of the academic year.

Family and Medical Leave Policy (FMLA), Policy 4.20 Eligible employees are provided job protection for up to 12 weeks per leave year for FMLA - certified events. Employees may take an unpaid absence (leave without pay), charge their leave balances to be paid for the absence, or use a combination of both unpaid and paid leave for this period of time. Qualifying events may include the birth of a child; the adoption or foster care of a child; care taking of a family member (child, spouse, or parent) with a serious health condition; an employee's own serious health condition that makes him or her unable to do his or her job; and qualifying exigency situations related to military service/members. Up to 26 weeks of unpaid leave may be provided to care for a covered service member with a serious injury or illness if the employee is the spouse, son, daughter, parent, or next of kin of the service member.
