Job Description
This attorney, based on the campus of Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University in Blacksburg, Virginia, will serve the Attorney General under the direction of the Chief of the Education Section and Virginia Tech University Legal Counsel, and will serve the university by providing legal advice and representation to university leadership, administration, faculty and employees on a wide variety of legal matters impacting higher education in addition to other advising duties as assigned. Virginia Tech is a leading research institution, with a student population of more than 30,000 undergraduate, graduate and professional students across the Commonwealth, and the University manages a research portfolio of more than $556 million.
Required Qualifications
It is anticipated that the attorney will handle a broad range of legal matters, serving all divisions of the University, in coordination with the other attorneys in the Office of the University Counsel.
Areas of emphasis include Title IX compliance and other matters, as well as general litigation and litigation management and student matters.
The position may also assist, as needed, in the areas of regulatory requirements, contract, sponsored research, and non-disclosure agreements.
Additionally, the individual will provide other legal services to the University and the Commonwealth as directed by the Office of the Attorney General and the University Counsel.
A minimum of five years of experience in the general practice of law is required.
Excellent interpersonal skills are also required.
High level organizational skills and an ability to manage many projects simultaneously and work under pressure are required.
Admission to the Virginia Bar is required before beginning employment.
The successful candidate will have excellent analytical abilities and written and oral communication skills and be able to respond to legal requests in a timely fashion.
