Job Description
Virginia Western Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education operating under the Virginia Community College System, a statewide system of community colleges. The College operates under the policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Virginia Western Community College Local Advisory Board.
Virginia Western is located on a 70-acre campus in southwest Roanoke, VA. The service region of the College includes Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County, Craig County, Franklin County, and southern Botetourt County. The College was established in 1966 and has grown from an initial enrollment of 1,352 to its current annual enrollment of over 9,000 students in credit courses and more than 1,400 enrollments in fast-track workforce and continuing education courses.
Virginia Western Community College is accepting applications for a part-time Administrative Assistant / Culinary Arts Lab Technician in the Culinary Arts Department in the School of Business, Technologies & Trades. This position provides kitchen lab management and administrative assistance to the faculty in the culinary arts program. Position duties include assistance with inventory management, inventory delivery receipt and stocking / storage, facility upkeep including cleaning and maintenance requests, various clerical duties in support of the program and faculty to include supporting multiple kitchen labs (preparation / setup / breakdown).
Special Assignments
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's / Required Qualifications
High school diploma, or an equivalent combination of education, training and / or experience. Knowledge of managing inventory and rotation of food and ability to complete basic math calculations. Ability to balance multiple tasks and prioritize those to help office run smoothly. Excellent skills in using computers and software to include working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, internet navigation skills and web-based software. Excellent public relations skills and the ability to work with a wide variety of people, ranging from teachers and students to the general public. Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
Additional Considerations
Associate's degree in Culinary Arts or related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training and / or experience is preferred. Knowledge of the academic environment and Microsoft Office preferred. Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds, knowledge of use of hand trucks / carts preferred. Experience in the food-service industry ideally in purchasing, inventory and food rotation, general physical kitchen cleaning and sanitizing experience is preferred. Prefer food service and purchasing experience to include food rotation. Knowledge of FIFO (first in / first out) inventory management is preferred. Experience working in a community college environment and working with Federal Work Study students is preferred. Experience supervising work of other employees is preferred.
