Summary:
Prepares, evaluates and examines microscopically exfoliated cells from body fluids.
Collaborates regularly with the healthcare team including pathology, histology, radiology, physicians, and nursing to form a complete diagnosis.
Position Responsibilities:
• Demonstrates practical and theoretical knowledge of cytologic specimen collection and preparation; and is accountable and responsible for rendering specific and accurate preliminary diagnoses on all gyn and non-gyn specimens using appropriate clinical information and reference material. Uses appropriate methods to identify cells on atypical smears and approved phrasing in preliminary diagnosis to support findings.
• Attends fine needle biopsy (FNB) procedures in Radiology and Ultrasound. Assists in obtaining diagnostic quality samples and provides feedback to radiologist.
• Responsible for performing all quality assurance activities including but not limited to: proficiency survey participation, workload monitoring, abnormal report documentation, correlation of cytology and histology findings, licensure activities, selection of pathologist review slides, adherence to retention guidelines and adherence to CLIA88 mandated workload volume parameters.
Position Qualifications Required / Experience Required:
Minimum of twelve months cytology experience required in an accredited laboratory preferred.
Demonstrates thorough knowledge of the theory and practice of cytology with the ability to correlate clinical and laboratory data and utilize such information in rendering cytologic diagnoses.
