Job Description
General Overview: At an entry level, facilitates recreation and natural science education programs designed to deliver meaningful stewardship education, including water quality and natural resource protection.
· Participates in the development of new programs and ensures the safety of participants. May provide instruction and direction to temporary workers, interns and/or volunteers.
· Responsible for safety and delivery of the conservation message when in the field.
· This position develops competence by performing structured work assignments and receives instruction, guidance and direction from supervisor, manager and/or more experienced colleagues.
· Coordinates outdoor recreation and natural science programs designed to deliver meaningful stewardship education including water quality and natural resource protection.
· Assists in the development of programs and updates programs as necessary.
· Assists in the development, construction and maintenance of program equipment and facilities. Prepares, organizes and cleans up activity sites.
· Assists with identifying ways to improve cost recovery and reduce operational expenses. –
· Conducts pre-program orientation with participants on program and safety rules. Implements effective safety measures when necessary.
· Observes necessary precautions to secure the safety of program participants and render routine first aid in cases of minor injury.
· Responds to comments, questions and complaints from program participants.
· Assists with the facilitation of special events that promote natural science programs.
· Conducts pre-program inspections of equipment. Cleans and stores equipment after programs.
· Repairs and maintains equipment for safe use. Secures supplies and equipment for assigned programs. Drives as needed in the course of providing programs. Minimum Qualifications: Four years or more of related experience. A degree(s) in natural science, education, recreation or a relevant field may be substituted per client guidelines for certain years of experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
· Knowledge of developmentally appropriate activities for children - Knowledge of natural science programs relevant to assigned location
· Knowledge of water-based recreation and challenge course programs relevant to assigned location
· Knowledge of operating and maintenance budgets
· Knowledge of animal behavior and habitat
· Skill in verbal and written communication, including effectively communicating information to large audiences
· Skill in creating and delivering presentations
· Skill in articulating complex, technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences
· Skill in handling and presenting reptiles and amphibians in an safe engaging manner
· Skill in meeting deadlines - Intermediate skill level in office productivity applications (such as e-mail, word processing, spreadsheets, etc.)
· Basic skill level in Natural Science Center facility management reservation system if used in assigned location
· Ability to balance and manage competing high priority work demands
· Ability to work in both a collaborative team environment and individually - Ability to motivate children and adults
Work Environment:
· Work hours are primarily spent in an outdoors or classroom environment
· Some hours are spent in a rugged outdoor environment including traversing rugged natural terrain involving significant distances (sometimes several hundred acres)
· Some work hours are spent in an office environment
· Work involves weekends, holidays and non-standard hours
· Work involves exposure to various and sometimes extreme weather conditions
· Work involves exposure to natural hazards such as fire ants, snakes, wasps and other stinging insects and other wildlife
· Work involves use of protective equipment
· Incumbents who lead high ropes courses work at heights up to 60 feet
· Work of incumbents who lead rafting programs involves exposure to water surface conditions and wave action
Physical Demands:
· Work involves frequent standing and/or walking in facilitating programs
· Frequently lifts and carries up to 25 pounds
· Work involves frequent climbing, crawling, crouching or other non-sitting positions in setting up for educational and recreations
· Occasionally pushes or pulls up to 50 pounds
· Work involves occasionally lifting up to 50 pounds from the floor to the waist, to over head
· Work involves occasional finger/hand manipulation in using a keyboard and mouse
· Work involves occasional finger/hand manipulation in using hand tools and operating equipment. Performs work at chest level or higher, including overhead full arm extension holding up to 35 pounds less than 20 percent of the time.
