Job Description
A Data Steward is responsible for ensuring the delivery and maintenance of a comprehensive metadata and governance system, with well-defined data processes and procedures properly documented on a reliable platform. The primary focus of a Data Steward is to establish and document a common definition of data elements through collaboration and influence. Furthermore, a Data Steward will determine, finalize, and document the expected data quality that can be verified using predetermined measures. Other important aspects of metadata that the Data Steward must agree upon and document include data lineage, confidentiality, consistency, latency, and data process flows. Clear communication of these decisions is essential.
The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in data management, quality assurance, database and metadata management technology, data orchestration, process design, and enterprise system integration. The Data Steward will contribute to critical analysis, communication, and planning across various data initiatives.
The successful candidate will report to the US-ITS Data Strategy & Governance Officer and collaborate with organizational stakeholders across various business lines and enabling areas.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as a subject matter expert in best practices for data governance and quality, ensuring that appropriate safeguards are in place.
- Take active ownership of specific data domains, processes, and procedures.
- Create and edit data requirements, models, dictionaries, process maps, and data lineage/mapping.
- Utilize a standardized approach to capture and document metadata across different data domains.
- Communicate with stakeholders to gather all necessary information to determine and address their specific needs.
- Develop valuation and quality measures, sharing them across businesses and enabling areas.
- Gather, document, and review data requirements with various business and data partners throughout the organization.
- Understand the use, capture, and maintenance of data to effectively manage, participate in, and influence the creation of metadata within a data governance tool.
- Collect requirements for data quality assessments.
- Drive continuous improvement efforts, monitor ongoing results, define process areas for review, and conduct benchmarking activities to achieve best-in-class results for data management.
- Ensure adherence to standards and controls, focusing on data quality, problem management, and change management requests.
- Collaborate with the Office of the Chief Data Officer (CDO) to promote synergies, standardization, and best practices.
- Regularly review, measure, and report on master data quality.
- Partner with the Project Management Office to integrate governance practices into the project lifecycle, including data migration activities.
- Lead all aspects of change management and training related to the rollout and ongoing initiatives of the Data Governance program.
Qualifications
- 3-5 years of experience in data management, demonstrating the ability to analyze, interpret, and explain systems and approaches for data that enable business decisions.
- Mastery of relational database theories and schemas.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to influence and engage others.
- Proven ability to build strong relationships with peers and leaders through trust and credibility.
- Flexibility and adaptability to work in an ever-changing environment.
