Director of Palm Springs Tourism

The Director actively develops, communicates, and implements the Visit Palm Springs Tourism (Palm Springs Bureau of Tourism) Marketing & Communications Strategic Plan.

The Director works with the internal Visit Greater Palm Springs sales, marketing and destination teams and the Palm Springs Bureau of Tourism to conduct research, develop media plans and implement marketing and public relations programs focused on driving awareness and visitation to Palm Springs tourism Stakeholders.

This position must have strong public speaking/presentation skills and strategic thinking abilities.

Will require frequent day travel within the destination for meetings and events and additional domestic overnight travel for meetings, conferences and presentations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

STRATEGIC INIATIATIVES

  • Establish The program of work will be established between the Palm Springs Bureau of Tourism along with Visit Greater Palm Springs Chief Sales & Marketing Officer
  • Provide strategic brand insight and direction that pertain to marketing efforts to build awareness and grow brand recognition.
  • Develop and execute annual strategic media plans in partnership with media agency.
  • Actively lead the development, communication, coordination and implementation of the City of Palm Springs Sales and Marketing Strategic Plan elements.
  • Works with the internal Visit Greater Palm Springs sales, marketing and destination teams, the City of Palm Springs’ stakeholders and the Bureau to utilize research, develop media plans and implement marketing programs focused on driving awareness and increased revenue to the City of Palm Springs.
  • Active involvement and engagement in media missions, activations, FAMS and other industry events.
  • Pro-actively identify and assess new opportunities and developments in media consumption and viewpoints that may impact the City of Palm Springs in the short and long term.

ACCOUNT MANAGEMENT INIATIATIVES

  • Act as liaison between Palm Springs Bureau of Tourism, key Stakeholders and Visit Greater Palm Springs.
  • Act as primary contact for the Bureau’s team, managing Senior Marketing Manager and Marketing Manager. Work with internal teams to provide guidance and support for questions and requests.
  • Manage all billing and invoicing issues, including providing monthly billing book and accrual reports.
  • Develop creative briefs, upon receipt of input document from the Bureau, for each project that describe the strategy, specific goals and message of each project. Review and approve creative deliverables.
  • Monitor annual trends and ongoing analysis of consumer attitudes and behavior.
  • Plan account meetings, reviews, requirements sessions, and briefings as needed.
  • Provide reporting on status, timeline, and results of all projects and initiatives.
  • Manage strategic media including co-op media, planning and buying.
  • Regularly host domestic and international in-market media.
  • Liaise between collaboration partners and stakeholders.
  • Host partner resource meetings and seminars with guest speakers and tips to improve their respective marketing initiatives.

Education and/or Experience

  • College degree preferred, particularly in Hotel, Marketing or Communications.
  • Previous DMO/CVB experience preferred.
  • Seven to ten years of experience in sales, public relations, advertising, and marketing environment.
  • Minimum of 5 years overseeing or leading a team.
  • Strong communication and decision-making skills.
  • Strong knowledge of reading and interpreting reports and tools for industry insights.
  • Strong administrative and organizational skills (deadline and detail oriented).
  • Demonstrates ability to coordinate a variety of people who possess varying degrees of technical knowledge.

Leadership

  • Maintains a positive, upbeat attitude and role in the organization. Promotes and exemplifies Visit Greater Palm Springs values; represents departmental objectives and interests to internal operations and external customers and relationships.
  • Represent the Palm Springs Bureau of Tourism in various board, industry, and community leadership meetings.
  • Build relationships and open communication both internally and externally with team members, agencies, partners and stakeholders.
  • Make recommendations on new creative strategies to amplify the destination.
  • Ensure inclusivity is woven into the fabric of the strategic marketing/communications plan.

  • Strong knowledge of online communications strategies and tactics, usability standards, branding and the latest digital technologies, tools and best practices
  • Experience in tracking and analyzing key metrics such as engagement and sentiment
  • Knowledge of social networks, online communities in the hospitality industry, content management systems and relevant mobile applications
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment

Language Skills

Must be able to analyze and interpret general business information, technical procedures related to the job functions and to governmental regulations. Ability to create business reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals/memorandums. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from clients, managers, colleagues and the general public.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to calculate figures and amounts as required for budgets, pricing, sales, reports, discounts, percentages as required for the position.

Reasoning ability

The ability to solve practical problems and deal with a multitude of variables including, but not limited to, information submitted in oral, written, diagram, report or spreadsheet form.

Required Technical / Other Skills / Licenses/Travel

Proficient with business machines such as copy, fax, printer, desktop computers, laptops and cell phones. Proficient with business software including Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.

Must have a valid driver license and current automobile liability insurance that meets or exceed California requirements. Updated MVRs may be collected periodically.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear, sit and stand, use hands and finger dexterity; reach with hands and arms; frequently required to walk and stand for long periods of time; occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop or lift up to 25 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is moderately quiet.
