Media Relations Manager
Visit Phoenix is seeking for an experienced, enthusiastic, collaborative communicator to serve as our Media Relations Manager. The Media Relations Manager is responsible for proactively securing media coverage about the Greater Phoenix metropolitan area as a leading leisure and business travel destination.
The Media Relations Manager assists with strategic planning, developing, implementing, and executing various media plans and partnership opportunities including participation in media trips, events, and interviews. This individual will act as a key media resource within our organization.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Build and maintain relationships with regional, national, and international traditional and trade media, as well as content creators.
- Vet and qualify media opportunities for potential hosting, including both traditional media and digital opportunities.
- Manage queries from regional, national, and international media, including inquiries for editorial b-roll and photography, utilizing the organization’s digital asset management system.
- Write, review, and send approved pitches for media inquiries, including both traditional pitches and TravMedia/Substack pitches. Additionally, assign pitches to specialists, coordinators, or interns as needed to support their career growth.
- Provide insight and ideas on the Media Relations Program of Work, department strategy plan, and Visit Phoenix’s annual business plan.
- Attend media missions, tradeshows, and conferences as needed. Assist with the planning and execution of Media Missions and Media Marketplaces. Managing itinerary planning for media visits, including but not limited to sending member leads, conducting airfare research, coordinating with member hotels, restaurants, and attractions, and creating and distributing itineraries.
- Collaborate with the Arizona Office of Tourism and other area DMOs on FAMs and media tours as needed.
- Review and edit ideas for the “What’s New in PHX” monthly e-newsletter. This includes checking links, images, and additional content supplied by the department specialist/coordinator. Once approved, the project will need to be uploaded into the appropriate project management system for marketing to build the newsletter.
- Review and prepare the department’s monthly activity report with the department specialist/coordinator for approval by the Director.
- Oversee department data entry into the CRM system to maintain accurate information for media and member contacts; maximize tools available in the CRM system for efficient tracking and reporting.
- Attend events as a Visit Phoenix representative as needed.
Experience, Knowledge & Attributes:
- Five years of successful Communications or PR experience
- Excellent written and verbal skills required
- Creative and strategic problem solver who exercises sound judgment
- Proven ability to be self-directed and work with minimal supervision
- Must be able to speak/present to an audience of various sizes
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects/responsibilities simultaneously while meeting deadlines
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills, adaptable while maintaining composure under pressure
- Ability to develop effective partnerships and relationships internally and externally
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with all internal and various vendors/clients
- Experience in tourism, travel, meetings, or related industries is a plus
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
- Travel frequency will vary, but travel is required for this role.
Starting Compensation Range: $60,000-$65,000 annually
