What are the responsibilities and job description for the PRN Nurse position at Vista Autism Services?
The PRN Health Nurse, in collaboration with the Health Nurse Coordinator, assists with medication administration and evaluation of First Aid injuries and illnesses. This position reviews student records, ensures that all medication, treatment plans, and other requirements are met and supports the medical response training of staff.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Administers medications to designated students in dosage and manner prescribed
- Documents and maintains accurate records and medicine supply checks, including but not limited to medication authorization forms, physician scripts, medication requests, charting, etc.
- Performs assessments and provides treatment for actual or potential student health problems, and administers First Aid for employee work-related injuries
- Provides emergency care for acute illness of students and staff by responding to the scene of the emergency in a quick manner
- Manages communicable disease outbreak controls and relevant communications necessary on school campus
- Provides First Aid, CPR, EpiPen, AED, and other relevant medical training to company personnel as needed
- Properly maintains nursing supplies, equipment such as AEDs, first aid kits, and monthly supplies for the nursing office
- Coordinates and communicates effectively and frequently with families and medical professionals, including the Certified School Nurse, as well as the Pupil Services Director, Behavior Health Services Director, Education Director, MDT teams when needed, and related company personnel to ensure and high quality nursing services
- Completes other duties as assigned
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The following positions or frequent movements are typical of the job: sitting, walking, standing, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, stooping, kneeling, and crawling, often for extended periods of the workday. Assignment may require the ability to quickly attend to or physically move students during possible physical or medical interventions to maintain a safe learning environment.
The position requires that an individual be able to learn new tasks quickly and effectively. Job requirements may change frequently. The ability to understand and carry out detailed, involved, instructions is mandatory. The incumbent must be able to travel to multiple locations as needed, when needed to conduct organizational business. Subject to inside environmental conditions.
EXPECTED SCHEDULE
The PRN Nurse fills in on an as-needed basis, to cover for staffing shortages and when additional personnel are needed to provide support to the Nursing team.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Valid Pennsylvania LPN license required
- Valid CPR, First Aid and AED certification and administrative trainer designation required
- Satisfactory completion of Safe and Positive Approaches (“SAPA”) Training required
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
- Valid Pennsylvania RN license preferred
- Certification in First Responder courses highly desired
- Experience delivering medical services to individuals on the Autism Spectrum and concurring medical issues highly desired
- Advanced practice training highly desirable
- Demonstrates strong leadership abilities and organizational skills
- Effectively manages multiple priorities, projects, and deadlines
- Problem solves in a positive manner to analyze issues and create action plans
