FIBER OPTIC CABLE LOCATOR

Job Summary
Vistabeam is seeking a detail-oriented and safety-conscious Fiber Optic Cable Locator to join our field operations team. This role is critical to protecting our underground fiber optic infrastructure and ensuring uninterrupted service to our customers. The ideal candidate will be responsible for identifying and marking the locations of underground fiber optic lines using industry-standard equipment and methods prior to excavation or construction work.

Accountabilities:

• Accurately locate and mark underground fiber optic cable paths using electromagnetic locating equipment, GIS maps, and project documentation.
• Respond to 811 One-Call tickets and internal locate requests within required timelines.
• Conduct site visits to assess field conditions and verify utility routes and placement
• Maintain thorough and accurate records to locate activities, site photos, and as-built documentation.
• Communicate clearly with contractors, property owners, utility companies, and internal teams to coordinate safe digging and construction activities.
• Report damage or compromised cable infrastructure and assist with emergency locates as needed.
• Perform routine equipment checks and ensure locating tools are calibrated and maintained.
• Stay current with federal, state, and local regulations regarding utility locating and damage prevention practices.

Skills:

• High school diploma or equivalent; technical certification or coursework in telecommunications or utility location is a plus.
• 1 year of experience in underground utility locating, preferably with fiber optic cable
• Familiarity with electromagnetic locating tools (e.g., RD8100, Vivax-Metrotech, or similar)
• Knowledge of underground utility construction methods and safety protocols
• Ability to read and interpret utility maps, blueprints, and schematics
• Strong attention to detail and spatial awareness
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to work independently in various weather and terrain conditions
• Valid driver’s license and clean driving record

Work Environment

• Field-based with daily travel within service territory
• Must be able to walk, bend, lift, and carry equipment (up to 50 lbs)
• Occasional overtime and on-call duties may be required.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $18.00 - $21.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40 per week
