In this position you will…
- Perform specified functions to meet the requirements of each approved procedure
- Assemble supplies and equipment for scheduled procedures according to physicians’ preference cards
- Inspect equipment for proper working condition
- Follow principles of aseptic technique and prescribed operating/procedure room procedures
- Adhere to aseptic technique when opening sterile packages and preparing for the procedure
- Arrange instruments according to given procedure
- Confirm that instruments work properly
- Maintain availability of instruments and supplies to avoid delays
- Report observed or suspected breaks in sterile technique and act according to policy
- Correctly use, care for, clean, and sterilize instruments, supplies, and equipment as directed
- Handle equipment and instruments correctly to provide appropriate availability and safety
- Assist in maintaining adequate supplies in the operating room for immediate access during procedure
- Assist in storing and stocking supplies as directed
- Maintain and update instrument cards and surgeons’ preference cards
- Respond in a timely manner to meet the needs of the patient and physician
- Document patient-care records and other forms according to facility policies and procedures
- Accurately advises others responsible for care of the patient about the patient’s status
- Maintain a clean and orderly central processing area (e.g., shelves, counters, equipment)
- Adhere to sterilization process policies and procedures
- Clean each item according to manufacturer’s instructions
- Inspect instruments under microscope for damage and defects; lubricates items as required
- Determine whether each item is in good working condition
- Sort and arrange items into proper trays according to established policy/procedure
- Wrap trays and individual items according to established policy/procedure
- Accurately label each item with name and expiration date
- Correctly operate sterilizers, ultrasonic washer, and other processing equipment (i.e., position items correctly in sterilizer, select proper cycle, seek assistance when needed)
- Check equipment indicators for proper functioning
- Perform required biological/chemical monitoring tests on all sterilizers and maintains logs according to established policy/procedure
- Maintain availability of recording supplies for continuity of recording throughout sterilization process
- Maintain inventory levels and accurate records
- Perform weekly inspections of all sterile items in facility
- Check for outdated items and package integrity of wrapped sterilized items; replaces items as necessary
- Place items in correct location
- Maintain adequate inventory of supplies for the sterile processing area
- Maintain/update the instrument tray inventory list
- Accurately document count of instruments loaned/returned to outside sources
Qualifications
Required
- Current BLS Certification
- Operating room experience
- Strong ethical and moral character references
- Training/courses in sterile technique, sterilization of instruments
- Completion of surgical scrub technician course or Licensed Practical Nursing Licensure
Preferred
- Two years’ previous operating room experience
- ASC experience
