Job Summary

The Speech Language Pathologist is responsible for providing diagnostic and therapeutic services to individuals with communication disorders, voice impairments, and swallowing difficulties. This role involves coordinating speech pathology programs, ensuring staff competency, and providing administrative oversight while delivering high-quality patient care. The Speech Language Pathologist also participates in the development, implementation, and evaluation of department policies, quality assurance programs, and staff training.

Key Responsibilities

Program Development & Coordination:

  • Coordinate central planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of speech pathology programs, collaborating with the Chief of Service and Department Administrator.
  • Contribute to setting departmental goals, managing projects, and overseeing staff training and continuing education.
  • Oversee the development, implementation, and revision of departmental policies, clinical practice agreements, and quality assurance programs.
  • Ensure Speech Pathologists comply with licensure requirements and professional standards.

Staff Management & Training

  • Oversee the orientation and training of new staff members.
  • Ensure competency levels of Speech Pathology staff, and provide training for complex cases.
  • Participate in the interviewing and selection of new Speech Pathologist candidates and conduct performance assessments for current staff.
  • Coordinate and schedule office hours and leave for Speech Pathologists.

Clinical Case Management

  • Provide direct patient care by evaluating and administering diagnostic tests and developing treatment plans for communication disorders, voice impairments, swallowing difficulties, and neurological conditions.
  • Advise physicians on test results and collaborate with them to adjust treatment programs as needed.
  • Serve as a consultant on interdisciplinary teams and provide specialized expertise in areas such as pediatric speech or traumatic brain injury.

Administrative Duties

  • Collect and compile Speech Pathology statistics, monitor budgets, and assist with departmental policy development.
  • Ensure compliance with The Joint Commission (TJC), federal, state, and local requirements.
  • Develop protocols and treatment programs for specialized areas and present in-service training programs.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Assume other duties as assigned to support department needs and ensure optimal service delivery.

Required Qualifications

  • Current and valid Speech Language Pathologist license in the state of practice.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Speech Language Pathologist, including experience in program development and staff management.
  • Strong knowledge of speech pathology practices, clinical procedures, and therapeutic interventions for communication disorders.
  • Ability to develop and implement clinical programs, policies, and training initiatives.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for patient interaction, team collaboration, and training staff.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification in a specialized area of Speech Language Pathology (e.g., pediatric speech, traumatic brain injury).
  • Experience in working with diverse patient populations, including adults and children with complex conditions.
  • Previous experience in a supervisory or leadership role.

  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills, especially in complex or specialized patient care scenarios.

Education

  • Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology from an accredited program
