Position Summary:
The Shoreside Mechanic reports directly to the Port Engineer and is responsible for the management and execution of heavy equipment maintenance and repair; rolling stock maintenance and repair; and marine and terminal assets.
Essential Job Functions:
• Develops and maintains budgets
• Maintains and repairs terminal assets including various pieces of rolling stock pumps, lift trucks, etc.
• Maintains and repairs marine assets including pumps, engines, and related mechanical systems
• Tests mechanical products and equipment after repair or assembly to ensure proper performance and compliance with manufacturers specifications
• Repairs and/or replaces damaged or worn parts
• Operates and inspects machines or heavy equipment in order to diagnose defects
• Diagnoses faults or malfunctions to determine required repairs using engine diagnostic equipment such as computerized test equipment and calibration devices
• Disassemble and reassemble heavy equipment using hoists and hand tools
• Cleans, lubricates and performs other routine maintenance work on equipment and vehicles
• Examines parts for damage or excessive wear, using micrometers and gauges
• Schedules maintenance for industrial machines and equipment
• Maintains accurate service records
• Assembles gear systems – aligning frames and gears
• Adjusts, repairs or replaces mobile mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment
• Welds or solders broken parts and structural members, using electric or gas welders and soldering tools
• Cleans parts with grease solvent
• Adjusts, maintains, repairs and/or replaces subassemblies such as transmissions and crawler heads using hand tools, jacks and cranes
• Adjusts and maintains industrial machinery, using control and regulating devices
• Fabricates needed parts or items from stock metal
• Performs facilities maintenance work as needed
• Assists with vessel shipyard work as needed,

Minimum Qualifications:
• High school diploma or equivalent
• Four (4) years related experience
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
• Ability to read and understand operating manuals, blueprints, and technical drawings
• Knowledge of rolling stock maintenance and repair
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals, as well as compute rates, ratios and percentages
Education:
• High school diploma, or equivalent
(1 year of directly related work experience may qualify to substitute 1 year of education to meet the education requirement)
Required Training & Certificates:
• Welding certificate, preferred
• Attends training sessions, seminars and appropriate educational classes required by department.
• Computer skills commensurate with program and job applications.

The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, vehicles and equipment; high precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; outside weather conditions; risk of electrical shock; and vibration.
The employee must be able to physically travel by air within, and out of, the State of Alaska.
