Overview

Though 9 in 10 Latino young adults say that a college degree is important for success in life, fewer than 15% ages 25 or older hold a bachelor’s degree. Voices College-Bound Language Academies exists to change that. 

 

Voices is a public charter school network with a mission to prepare all students for the challenges of higher education through the context of an academically rigorous dual-immersion program. Every student, regardless of home language, graduates bilingual and biliterate in English and Spanish. 

 

Role Summary

Voices: College-Bound Language Academies is seeking a dynamic, passionate, and community-focused individual to join our team as the Family & Community Engagement Coordinator. This individual will be responsible for fostering empowered relationships with families, the local community, and school staff to ensure a supportive, inclusive, and thriving school environment. With Activismo as one of our values, this includes building political and communal power within the community to continue to demand excellent educational options. The Coordinator will work closely with the Principal and Dean of Culture to lead and coordinate school events, enhance student recruitment and enrollment, and build empowered partnerships that contribute to the school’s mission of preparing students for college and beyond.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Event Planning & Coordination:

  • Collaborate with the Dean of Culture to plan, coordinate, and execute school-wide events including but not limited to family nights, family-teacher conferences, open houses, celebrations, and workshops.
  • Collaborate with the Dean of Culture to ensure events are well-organized, run smoothly, and align with the school’s and greater Network culture and educational goals.
  • Work with the Dean of Culture to collaborate with teachers, staff, and families to ensure all events are inclusive and meet the needs of the school community.

2. Student Recruitment & Enrollment Support:

  • Assist in developing and executing network-wide recruitment strategies to increase student enrollment, including outreach to prospective families through door knocking, canvassing, tabling events, phone banking, etc.
  • Input and organize recruitment data using network-wide platform(s) to ensure accuracy of prospective student information.
  • Track enrollment metrics, event details, and outreach activities with integrity and data precision.
  • Generate comprehensive reports that provide actionable insights into enrollment trends and prospective student engagement and outreach effectiveness.Work closely with central office staff (Team Z) on the following:
    • Collaborate and support strategic enrollment initiatives
    • Design and manage outreach materials
  • Coordinate school tours, shadow days, and informational sessions to engage new families.
  • Provide ongoing support throughout the enrollment process, including collecting enrollment documents and coordinating with the school-site Business Manager, to ensure a smooth transition for students and families.

3. Family Organizing and Empowerment:

  • Foster empowered relationships with families through regular communication, including newsletters, phone calls, and meetings in order to build local and political power as a community.
  • Collaborate with the Dean of Culture to coordinate and facilitate opportunities for families to engage in collective learning about local governance, political systems, and advocacy, empowering them to understand and exercise their political power to influence community decisions and policies.
  • Act as a resource for families, addressing concerns, providing guidance, and connecting them with additional support services.

4. Community Partnerships:

  • Cultivate and maintain partnerships with local community-based organizations (CBOs), businesses, political partners (such as local school board members), and cultural groups that align with the mission and vision of the school.
  • Develop programs and initiatives that connect students and families with the broader community.
  • Leverage community resources to support the school’s programs and initiatives, including mentorship opportunities, internships, and college readiness programs.

5. Staff Culture & Collaboration:

  • Work closely with the Principal and Dean of Culture to promote and strengthen the school’s positive staff culture.
  • Coordinate professional development sessions or team-building activities for staff to enhance community engagement and cultural competency.
  • Support staff in developing relationships with students and families to build trust and ensure a welcoming and inclusive environment.

6. Engagement Related Tasks:

  • Monitor and track family and community engagement metrics, providing regular updates to the Principal and Dean of Culture.
  • Assist in developing and distributing surveys to gather feedback from families and community members to improve engagement efforts.
  • Support the planning and execution of initiatives aimed at increasing overall school participation and involvement.
  • Skills:
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to connect with diverse families, community members, and staff.
    • Exceptional organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
    • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and take initiative.
    • Cultural competence and an understanding of the unique challenges faced by students and families in underrepresented communities.
    • Fluency in Spanish (preferred, but not required).

Working Conditions:

  • Regular requirement to stand, sit, walk, talk, hear, see, read, speak, reach, stretch with hands and arms, stoop, kneel and crouch 
  • Lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs 
  • Evening and/or weekend work 
  • Occasional travel 25%
  • Willingness to be trained as needed 

 

Prior to Employment: Once an offer has been extended, a candidate must meet the following criteria to receive a final contract:

  • First Aid/CPR/AED Certification
  • Clear Criminal Background Check
  • Valid TB Clearance

Key Compensation:

  • $74,000 - $82,000 annual salary
  • Exceptional growth opportunities

Employment:

  • Reports directly to the Principal
  • Permanent Full-Time, Exempt Position
  • Position follows a 12 month 
  • At-Will Agreement

Qualifications


Qualifications:

  • Education: BA/BS degree or related experience
  • Experience: Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in family engagement, community outreach, or event planning, preferably in a school or nonprofit setting.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Knowledge of and experience working with underserved communities preferred
  • Can work independently, have flexibility, and demonstrated success in Community Engagement 
  • Understanding of dual-immersion instructional practices and school design and the unique characteristics of public charter schools is a plus
  • Ability to work well independently and within a team environment; working efficiently, and exercising excellent judgment in making decisions 
  • Combine maturity, humility, a strong work ethic, a sense of humor, and a roll-up-my sleeves attitude to celebrate successes as well as navigate times of ambiguity and high levels of stress
  • Develop relational trust across constituencies, by maintaining a positive attitude with students, parents and staff, while also maintaining confidentiality

Salary : $74,000 - $82,000
