VOCAL (Voices of Change Animal League) is actively seeking a Clinic Medical Director/ Shelter Veterinarian to join our 501c3 animal welfare non-profit and work in our Community Clinic & Resource Center as well as alongside our rescue and shelter program. We are dedicated to serving animals in our local community through our innovative and compassionate programs designed to help keep pets in their homes and aid in minimizing the homeless pet population. We custom built our clinic in 2019 from donor funding and purchased brand new, state of the art equipment. Our mission is to solve the homeless pet problem through prevention, community outreach, adoption and collaboration.

The Clinic Medical Director and Shelter Veterinarian is responsible for overseeing the medical operations of the clinic and the shelter, ensuring the delivery of high-quality spay/neuter services and comprehensive veterinary care for shelter animals and clients. This role includes strategic planning, staff management, and collaboration with other departments to achieve the organization's mission of reducing pet overpopulation and providing excellent animal care. This position will allow for dedicated administrative time, separate from clinical responsibilities.

The ideal candidate for this position will be an experienced high volume spay neuter vet who loves surgery and is passionate about providing sterilization surgery for cats and dogs to reduce the overpopulation of homeless animals. VOCAL's clinic environment is fast-paced, upbeat, flexible and progressive.

Core Responsibilities:

Leadership and Management:

  • Provide leadership and direction to the clinic staff, including veterinarians and support staff, focusing on Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and best practices.
  • Develop and implement medical policies and procedures for spay/neuter operations and shelter care.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local veterinary regulations.
  • Report directly to the Executive Director; collaborate closely with the Clinic Manager, who will work alongside the Medical Director. The Medical Director will have the final say on all medical decisions.
  • Maintain indirect oversight of the clinic team via policies and procedures.

Clinical Oversight:

  • Oversee the daily care of clinic patients while allowing for dedicated time for administrative duties, such as drug logs and inventory management.
  • Monitor and evaluate the quality of care provided, ensuring adherence to high medical standards.
  • Address and resolve any clinical issues or concerns.

Surgical & Wellness Responsibilities:

  • Perform high-volume, high-quality spay/neuter surgeries and any specialty surgeries.
  • Examine animals pre-operatively to determine suitability for surgery.
  • Provide necessary care for clinic wellness patients.

Shelter Veterinary Care:

  • Provide comprehensive veterinary care for all shelter animals, including routine health checks, vaccinations, and treatment of illnesses and injuries.
  • Develop and implement protocols for disease prevention and control within the shelter.
  • Work closely with shelter staff to ensure the health and well-being of all animals.

Strategic Planning:

  • Participate in the development of the clinic and shelter's strategic plan, particularly regarding budget and staffing.
  • Identify opportunities for program development and improvement in medical services.

Staff Development:

  • Collaborate with the Clinic Manager and Operations Manager to ensure training and mentoring of veterinary staff, focusing on clinical competencies.
  • Promote continuing education and professional development for the veterinary team.

Regulatory Compliance:

  • Maintain a valid veterinary license and ensure it is on all veterinary supply accounts.
  • Carry the DEA license for the clinic, ensuring compliance with all regulations regarding controlled substances.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Veterinary degree (DVM or VMD) with a valid veterinary license.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a leadership role within a veterinary setting, preferably in a spay/neuter clinic and/or animal shelter.
  • Strong understanding of veterinary regulations and compliance.
  • Excellent surgical skills, particularly in high-volume spay/neuter procedures.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams.
  • Commitment to the mission and values of the nonprofit sector.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience in nonprofit veterinary management.
  • Proficiency in veterinary management software.
