VOLUNTEER LEGAL SERVICE HAWAII (Volunteer Legal) is a non-profit legal service provider serving the low to moderate-income throughout Hawaii. Volunteer Legal recruits, trains, and supports pro bono attorneys from the private sector in delivering legal advice, brief services, and full representation to income qualified individuals and families.
General Responsibilities
The Law Clerk will provide assistance in screening cases, collection and completion of client documents and performing any necessary duties for the facilitation of legal services.
A. Duties
This position will include case reviews, assisting with the Appellate Pro Bono Program and license reinstatement program, attending legal clinics, drafting simple pleadings and other legal documents and correspondence, filing with the Court or governmental agency; providing any research or analysis; client interview; and collecting and recording necessary information.
Attend Volunteer Legal staff meetings and comply with internal personnel policies and procedures including requirements relating to timely and accurate timesheets, and work schedules and attendance. They will also be expected to take on any other Project-related duties as requested by the Program Manager, Executive Director or Pro Bono Coordinator.
B. Required Qualifications
Juris Doctorate from an ABA accredited law school Those planning on taking the bar exam or awaiting bar exam results are encouraged to apply. Law Clerks may be hired as Staff Attorney upon passage of the bar exam.
The Law Clerk should have an in-depth knowledge of legal procedures and an ability to understand legal documents. They should possess strong oral and written communication skills, ability to think logically, organize data, detail oriented, good time management skills and the ability to work accurately with minimum supervision and ability to meet deadlines.
Law Clerk shall also have an understanding and interest in working with the low-income and at-risk population; demonstrate flexibility and ability to troubleshoot and resolve problems professionally; sensitivity to non-profit needs and limitations; have access to an automobile or other means of transportation; and familiarity with Microsoft Office.
C. Preferred but not required: Familiarity with Family Law, District Court, or Estate Law
D. Salary: Estimated $45,000 to 55,000

- Full-time exempt position
- Hybrid position - part in-office and part remote
- Monday to Friday
- As needed: (a) Attend in-person Saturday morning or Thursday evening legal clinics (approximately 4 hours); (b) Community Outreach
- Opportunity to: (a) Attend Neighbor Island Pop Up Legal Clinics; and (b) Shadow practicing attorneys that are providing basic legal services during Legal Clinics
