THERAPIST-Haven on Lincoln

About Us:  Volunteers of America is a national, faith-based nonprofit organization founded over 125 years ago. VOA Illinois is one of the oldest affiliates of the Volunteers of America family delivering strength-based trauma-informed, gender-responsive and culturally sensitive programs and services at the highest standards of excellence to our clients. We have never stopped reinventing our services and we continue to innovate based on our communities’ evolving needs. VOA Illinois, a certified “Great Place to Work,” fosters an organizational culture focused on faith, innovation and collaboration. Year after year VOA Illinois expands and promotes from within, holding a workforce with over 50% having experienced promotion. Position Type:  This is a Full-time, in-office and community position and requires a 40-hour week on average. May include occasional non-traditional work hours events/activities. This position is exempt and reports to the Clinical Program Director of Behavioral Health.

Environment:  Physical demands include sedentary work, operating a computer and other office productivity machinery with frequent communication with clients and colleagues of VOA Illinois and others involved in the care and custody of clients. The individual hired must be able to move, traverse and travel in the community in a vehicle, assist clients in and out of a vehicle if necessary and transport clients in the community.

Core Competencies:  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to meet or exceed the following;

  • Drive engagement and communication with clients that embodies empathy, patience and emotional intelligence.
  • Advocate for clients using active listening to determine resources and meet various needs.
  • Collaborate with VOA colleagues, outside organizations or vendors, etc. to connect clients and obtain necessary resources.
  • Display discipline in managing time and attention to assigned caseload, tasks or projects.
  • Exercise prudent stewardship of agency resources.
  • Exhibit cultural competence while serving clients of diverse backgrounds and commit to expanding knowledge and understanding of different communities and people groups.
  • Demonstrate ethical and professional behavior at all times.
  • Engage with trauma-informed care approach and practice principles.
  • Recognize and display ability to de-escalate and resolve conflict as necessary.

Program Overview:  VOA Illinois has partnered with the City of Chicago in an effort to provide vital support and stabilization services to the vulnerable population being targeted in the Housing Stabilization initiative.  The Haven on Lincoln site has been identified and is under construction in the Lincoln Square neighborhood with a tentative completion target of the Fall of 2025.  VOA Illinois proposes a Phased approach to the overall planned design by providing a comparable intervention to the targeted population utilizing a community-based housing stabilization model in the months preceding the completion of construction on The Haven on Lincoln. This approach maximizes resource utilization in the critical timeline for the funding being used and eliminates the significant gap in service delivery that the current construction schedule creates. Additionally, this approach is allows the spirit and intent of the original proposal to continue by only expanding the scope of the intervention rather than replacing or changing the original scope of the intervention. The Phase I intervention would target the same population, work on the same goals, provide the same menu of services and would utilize a portion of the staff positions already approved and identified in the original scope and budget. The only difference is in the setting – we would provide the services in a scattered site model utilizing extended stay hotels as the temporary housing location until construction on The Haven is complete and then any and all program participants being served at that time would transition to the new building.

Through this Phase I model, we will provide: 1) temporary housing stabilization through placement in hotels that offer extended stays; 2) holistic case management services; 3) behavioral healthcare; 4) access to primary medical care within their temporary housing placement; 4) meal delivery; 5) intensive peer support; and 6) ongoing well-being and support visits from Resident Engagement Specialists who will structure the well-being visits around meal delivery.

The therapist will provide a hybrid model of individual therapy to clients within this program.
