Major Functions
NOTE: This position’s schedule will be four (4) 10 hours days, which may include Saturdays and holidays. This position will be exposed to outdoor elements, fumes, dust, uneven ground, low/high temperatures, wet and/or high humidity.
- Overtime may be required, and schedules may change based on operational needs.
***The hiring rate for this position is $18.77 hourly plus a $ 1.50 per hour incentive for regular and overtime worked (not included in the base wage).
Illustrative Duties
(NOTE: These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position.)
- Operates crane or equivalent.
- Places and removes pipe.
- Operates tractor equipped with front end loader and backhoe with bucket of a yard or more.
- Operates truck mounted pavement striping machine.
- Operates a power grader on construction and maintenance work.
- Operates a heavy-duty gasoline or diesel road roller compacting material.
- Operates a heavy bulldozer and maintains a sanitary landfill.
- Directs truck drivers to dumping locations.
- Operates a bulldozer in fill area.
- Operates a lowboy.
- Transports equipment to and from construction site.
- Occasionally may operate a simple flatbed or dump truck, or a variety of minor powered machinery and equipment.
- Participates generally in the laboring work of the crew as workload demands.
- Operates front end loader.
- Loads fill, rock, slag, and other construction materials.
- Operates landfill compactor.
- Operates a semi-trailer with walking floor on regional roadways and in a landfill working environment.
- Operates a large front-end loader in an enclosed building with truck traffic using tipping floor attachments.
- Performs daily safety inspections of assigned equipment prior to and after use.
- Performs routine service and maintenance.
- May be assigned to other county locations based upon operational needs.
- Attends work on a regular and consistent basis.
- Must adhere to Federal, State, County and Local ordinances.
- Responds to emergency situations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
Possession of a valid Florida CDL of a class determined by the division/department of assignment within six (6) months of hire and maintain thereafter.
A comparable amount of education, training, or experience may be substituted for the minimum requirements.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver license.
The preferred candidate, having met the minimum requirements; will possess a Florida CDL Class A, and have at least one (1) year of experience in the operation of landfill equipment to include a bulldozer, excavator, front end loader, landfill compactor, semi-truck and waste separation equipment, and be familiar with Solid Waste operational practices or principles.
NOTE: A pre-employment skills test will be required.

- Thorough, demonstrated knowledge of the operation and safety precautions of the particular equipment to which assignment is made.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Skilled in the operation of complex construction equipment.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships.
- Must be able to work under stressful conditions.
- Must be able to relocate to other county locations based upon operational needs.
ADA REQUIREMENTS:
Physical Demands: Ability to perform essential duties and responsibilities and meet the minimum qualifications. Ability to lift, push (arm and leg), pull 50 pounds, reach, climb, visual acuity (depth perception and peripheral vision) necessary to operate a motorized vehicle; sit turn (neck and body), and handle.
Environmental Demands: Outside work. Exposure to inclement weather (heat, humidity, cold, rain), fumes, odors, noise, vibration, dust, poor ventilation.
Mental Demands: Ability to read and comprehend operational and safety instructions, procedures, rules, policies, warnings, memos. Ability to write simple sentences relaying information, data, and details. Ability to perform basic math.
