What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lifeguard position at Volusia Flagler Family YMCA?
The Southeast Volusia Family YMCA is looking for lifeguards to work various shifts.
Job-Specific Functions:
- Responsible for the safety of the aquatic facility patrons and the prevention of accidents and aquatic incidents. Scan zone vigilantly using the 10 x 10 rule and perform rescues and lifesaving techniques when needed. Render first aid as needed throughout the facility.
- Be inspection ready in staff uniform, with whistle, rescue tube and strap in ready position, pocket mask and in proper location for programming.
- Respond to members’ inquiries and concerns.
- Assist in maintaining the overall general care and cleanliness of the aquatic facility. Keep drains clean, gutter free of debris, pool bottom brushed, and overall deck cleanliness.
- Inspect aquatic facility on a daily basis and report any unsafe conditions and equipment.
- Maintain and check water chemistry, daily weather conditions and incidents and report to supervisor.
- Recognize and respond effectively to emergencies in accordance with the emergency action plan (EAP), including whistle codes. Practice EAP regularly. Understand specific responsibilities during fire, hurricane, tornado, or other emergency situations.
- Complete all assigned records and reports.
- Participate in staff meetings and in-service training sessions.
- Get substitution for shifts when unavailable.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Physical and/or Mental Requirements:
- Able to swim 300 yards, tread water for at least two minutes using legs only, surface dive head first and feet first and swim underwater at least 15 feet.
- Able to sit for extended periods of time including in an elevated chair and in the elements.
- Sight – Observe all assigned zones of the water area and be ready to perform rescues.
- Hear noises and distress signals in aquatic environment with background noise.
- Communicate verbally, including projecting the voice across distances, and communicate swiftly and effectively to emergency personnel over phone and in person.

Position Core Training Plan
Within 30 days of hire (or next available):
- Non-YMCA Lifeguard Certification must be crossed over to YMCA Lifeguard
Part-time: $14.00/hour
Certs/Licenses: YMCA Lifeguard or nationally recognized Lifeguard certification (American Red Cross, Ellis, Beach Lifeguard or Boy Scouts of America); CPR for the Professional Rescuer/AED; First Aid
Drug and background screening are required.
