Vortex Optics is looking for a talented individual to join our New Product Development (NPD) team. In this role, we're looking for an ambitious entry level Optics Engineer to design, develop, and test optical components and systems for sports optics products like riflescopes, binoculars, and spotting scopes. This person should be a great communicator and have the ability to work with cross-functional teams.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Design optical systems to be used in precision optical devices such as riflescopes, binoculars, spotting scopes, laser rangefinders, red dots, and other sports optics products.
  • Troubleshoot to solve unforeseen problems with product design or implementation.
  • Support New Product Development priorities with component and system optical designs and evaluation.
  • Aid in writing new product requirements based on market studies and customer feedback.
  • Understand customer product requirements and develop optical systems to meet those requirements.
  • Research optical technologies that would improve existing or future products' performance and capabilities.
  • Participate in market studies for new product concepts.
  • Participate in execution and analysis of facts and trends of the product categories, competitive product entries and consumer usage and attitudes.
  • Follow product roadmaps to enable achievement of product strategic goals.
  • Evaluate competitor products through reverse engineering, study, lab testing and field testing.
  • Ensure excellent communication with team members and other senior leaders on project status for all projects.
  • Communicate engineering information across teams and departments to facilitate successful completion of large-scale projects.
  • Collaborate with industrial designers, electrical engineers and mechanical engineers to create the best possible product balancing form, function, manufacturability, and cost.
  • Ensure all tasks, to bring new products to market, are completed on target and on time through cross functional team efforts.
  • Participate and offer help in testing new product prototypes to determine requirement compliance.
  • Collaborate with factory partners on day to day design tasks and ensuring the best possible product balancing form, function, manufacturability, and cost.
  • Aid in writing of invention disclosures and working with Project Managers, lawyers, and in-house Legal Division Manager to create patents.
  • Expand professional and technical knowledge of leading-edge developments in optical engineering through participation in professional organizations, networking events, and educational workshops.
  • Review industry publications to maintain a current perspective on the optical engineering field.
  • May need to travel to Asia 3-6 weeks per year. This will vary depending on annual project goals.
  • Domestic travel 1-3 weeks per year.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Optical Engineering or related degree.
  • Ready and able to perform optical design with little to no additional training necessary other than possibly learning a new optics design software package.
  • Preferred Experience and Skills

  • Experience with both imaging and non-imaging optics is highly desirable.
  • Experience and skill in electronics is desirable, particularly as related to optical sensors and detectors.
  • Experience with optical design software such as ZEMAX or CODE V with a firm grasp of computer aided optical design and optimization.
  • Experience with SolidWorks and similar modelling software is desirable.
  • Experience and skill in mechanical engineering, particularly as related to mounting and alignment of optical components, is desirable.
