VC Controller β CFO Track
A leading and pioneering Venture Capital firm based in San Diego is seeking an experienced Controller to join its dynamic team. The firm, known for its data-driven, predictive analytics approach to VC investing, is currently deploying capital from its third fund.
As Controller, you will work closely with the CFO and two accounting team members, overseeing financial reporting, investment closings, valuations, and investor communications. Key responsibilities include reviewing investment documentation, analyzing fund performance, managing portfolio company financials, and supporting audit, tax, and LP relations.
This role offers a clear growth trajectory to CFO as the current CFO plans to retire in the coming years.
Key Responsibilities:
Portfolio Company Oversight (75%):
- Ensure accurate financial tracking, valuations, and investment closings.
- Lead quarterly and annual valuation memos for 150 active portfolio companies.
- Work directly with portfolio company executives to provide financial guidance and support.
- Coordinate with valuation consultants and auditors to ensure accurate reporting.
- Review financial statements submitted by portfolio companies and flag key insights.
LP & Investor Relations (15%):
- Manage investor requests, distributions, and compliance reporting.
- Assist in the preparation of quarterly investor updates and annual financial reports.
- Support the CFO with benchmarking fund performance against industry peers.
- Prepare due diligence materials for potential investors and fundraising efforts.
Management Company Oversight (10%):
- Review monthly corporate accounting entries (processed by Accounting Manager).
- Oversee payroll processing and 401(k) contributions.
- Track and manage firm-level expenses, ensuring financial accuracy.
Candidate Profile:
- Bachelor's degree, preferably in Accounting or Finance.
- CPA license preferred
- At least five years of relevant experience in public accounting, venture capital / private equity or partnership-based settings.
- Strong analytical and accounting skills with a high attention to detail
- Strong proficiency in MS Office, particularly Excel (intermediate to advanced level); PowerPoint experience is a plus.
- Comfortable learning and using new computer applications.
- Well-organized and efficient, capable of managing multiple projects with diverse deadlines. Strong team player with leadership and mentoring skills for accounting staff.
- Self-starter, willing to take on unfamiliar tasks and to take ownership for all areas of responsibility.
- Proactive problem-solver who uses sound judgment to make decisions.
- Clear, professional communication style and exceptional presentation skills. Comfortable speaking with investors, portfolio company CEOs and vendors.

Compensation:
- $150k to $180k base
