The Community School Coordinator (CSC) is responsible for the implementation, integration, alignment, and coordination of the community school strategy at the site level. The Community School Coordinator works in partnership with the school administrator, families, students, and the site-based Leadership Team to assess the school community’s needs and assets, manage partnerships, and co-create a learning environment that supports a thriving school community where students flourish. The Community School Coordinator must work to create a high-performing Community School strategy wherein community members are connected, students and families are supported, and experience belonging and successful outcomes emerge.

Key Responsibilities

Collaborative Leadership, Shared Power, and Voice

Build a team to implement an asset and needs assessment, in partnership with all constituent groups to identify clear priorities, which will be re-assessed each year based on youth, family, and community voices.

Participate in the school leadership team, attendance team, school climate, and other committees and advise the principal on how to integrate partners and community members into these committees and other school governance structures.

Support the development of a co-created vision for the community school.

Act as a point person for agencies and programs interested in partnering with the school and help broker new partnerships that are aligned with the school vision and address the priorities identified by assets and needs assessment including but not limited to expanded learning and enrichment opportunities, health services, parent / family engagement, programming with local universities, and mental health services.

Gather, analyze, and use data to inform decisions and keep meeting results focused.

Regularly communicate with district or community-based organization leadership to assess alignment.

Integrated Student Supports

Build strong relationships with school partners and diverse community stakeholders and identify opportunities for them to align with the school vision.

Support MTSS wrap-around services in response to student and family needs (individual and school) that ensure that students are being connected to opportunities and services.

Family and Community Engagement

Connect in meaningful ways with families through various means to ensure their voices are heard, their wisdom shared, and needs are being identified and met.

Lead or participate in family engagement events with the school and community partners.

Coordinate educational opportunities for the family related to academics, basic life skills, or other identified needs.

Support the development of family leadership structures and support educator pipelines.

Expanded and Enriched Learning Opportunities

Support and identify partners for coordinated activities before, during, or after school, as well as the summer months. Maintain a lens of college / career readiness for all students.

Bridge communication between school day and afterschool staff.

Identify and provide support for students needing equitable academic enrichment (e.g. tutoring and credit recovery).

Culture of Belonging, Safety and Care

Support the implementation of restorative practices throughout the entire school.

Conduct periodic focus groups or informal conversations and collect other data to understand school climate and community interests and opportunities.

Manage and assist with volunteer and community events representing the school.

Support the development of youth leadership structures in support of continuous school improvement.

Rigorous, Community Connected Classroom Instruction

Participate in teacher learning committees, and examine data and curricula to explore potential partners.

Cultivate partnerships with local universities, museums, and cultural organizations to explore learning opportunities.

Desired Qualifications

Experience coordinating and / or managing programs in an educational, non-profit, or human services setting

3-5 years of experience in education or community-related role

Knowledge of school environment tiered interventions, professional learning communities, etc.

Ability to communicate and work with families

Strong written and verbal communication skills

A high degree of cultural awareness and competency in cross-cultural practice with children and families

Lived experience navigating systems similar to cultural communities, special student populations, and their  families

Understand and respect the diversity of families’ economic, linguistic, and cultural backgrounds and situations

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all staff, students, families, and the public

Available to work a flexible schedule that includes summer months, some evenings, and some weekends

Strong interpersonal and supervisory skills

Ability to negotiate and mediate to attain win-win situations

Experience developing and managing program budgets

Self-motivated with the ability to work independently, as well as part of a team

Computer literacy to include the use of Microsoft Word and Google applications

Ability to demonstrate good judgment, tact, confidentiality, diplomacy, patience, and courtesy

Knowledge of research-based strategies that support powerful family and community engagement
