Position Overview :
A Distribution Systems Operator Engineer plays a critical role within the utility or energy sector, ensuring the efficient, reliable, and safe distribution of electricity or gas to customers. This position is responsible for monitoring, controlling, and maintaining distribution systems using advanced technologies. Key Responsibilities :
System Monitoring :
Continuously monitor electrical or gas distribution systems, including transformers, circuit breakers, switches, and related equipment, using Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems. Ensure system reliability and detect potential issues before they escalate.
Emergency Response :
Respond promptly to alarms, outages, and emergencies. Make critical decisions to isolate and restore service, adhering to safety protocols and regulatory requirements.
Load Management :
Monitor and manage load distribution to ensure system stability. Implement load shedding during peak demand periods and restore load when feasible.
Switching Operations :
Execute switching operations to reconfigure distribution systems, isolate faults, and restore service.
Troubleshooting :
Diagnose and resolve issues related to equipment failures, voltage fluctuations, and power quality problems.
Data Analysis :
Analyze SCADA system data and other sources to identify trends, anomalies, and opportunities for system improvements.
Communication and Coordination :
Maintain effective communication with field personnel, dispatchers, and other operators. Collaborate with engineering, planning, and maintenance teams to coordinate system upgrades, repairs, or expansions.
Safety Compliance :
Ensure compliance with safety regulations, industry standards, and company policies. Promote a strong culture of safety within the team.
Documentation :
Maintain accurate records of system events, maintenance activities, and outages. Prepare reports and documentation as required by regulatory or organizational needs.
Training and Development :
Stay current with industry developments, emerging technologies, and regulatory changes through continuous training and professional development opportunities.
System Maintenance :
Participate in routine maintenance and inspections to prevent failures and enhance reliability.
Qualifications : Education :
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or a related field is required. Advanced degrees or certifications are preferred for senior roles.
Experience :
Previous experience in distribution system operations, utility work, or a related engineering role is advantageous. Familiarity with power distribution equipment and systems is essential.
Certifications :
Industry certifications such as NERC (North American Electric Reliability Corporation) or equivalent are desirable.
Technical Skills :
Proficiency with SCADA systems, Distribution Management Systems (DMS), and other utility-specific software tools. Strong understanding of electrical or gas distribution principles, equipment, and troubleshooting techniques.
