Job Description:

Vermont State University’s education department invites applications for a full-time, tenure track Assistant Professor of Early Childhood Education beginning in the Fall 2025 semester. Although this position is based out of the University's Castleton campus, the duties and responsibilities of this position entail online teaching and are part of one cross-campus education department which manages programs, some cross-campus and some campus-specific.

About Vermont State University:

The Vermont State College System (VSCS) is committed to nurturing a welcoming, diverse, and inclusive learning and working environment. We condemn racism and welcome all persons, regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, or ability, and want everyone to be safe and welcome in our community.

As a system of higher education, we formally condemn discrimination in all its forms, commit to fair and equitable treatment of everyone in our community, and strive to ensure all our actions, policies, and operating procedures reflect this commitment. We also acknowledge that education is both destabilizing and exhilarating and that learning necessarily involves hard conversations and moments of disagreement.

Our commitment is based on three pillars of diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice (DEISJ):

Personal Knowledge of DEISJ: We are committed to providing faculty, staff, and students opportunity for personal growth to increase their understanding of diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice related topics so that they can then apply that information to their lives, their community engagements, and their career.

Professional Knowledge of DEISJ: We are committed to providing faculty, staff and students access to training and learning about how their knowledge of diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice topics impact their professional and educational work.

Data informed Practices: We make decisions and examine our policies and practices based on valid and reliable data sets and how those decisions, policies and practices may positively or negatively impact different populations.

We recognize our diverse community members do not hold a single identity that may impact their belonging, or access to educational or professional opportunities. Each person holds multiple and intersecting personal and social identities that must be recognized as they engage in learning and professional development.

We actively pursue the inclusion of diverse students, faculty, and staff; break down barriers impacting access to education and professional growth for all; and nurture true belonging for our entire community.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

This position will prioritize three primary areas of responsibility, primarily focused on supporting our Early Childhood Education Online licensure program. The primary area of responsibility will be teaching and advising in the Early Childhood Education Online program. Advising is a vital component of our program and developing 1:1 relationship with students is key to their success. The candidate will additionally teach a variety of early childhood courses in our two-year, online program. These courses are delivered asynchronously in fall, spring, and summer semesters. This bachelor’s program prepares students for licensure birth to PreK only.

The secondary area of responsibility is to work with our colleagues at our Castleton campus to provide support for the inclusive Early Childhood Education and Early Childhood Special Education campus-based programs. Vermont State University’s Early Childhood & Special Education degree program prepares students for dual licensure: general education licensure in birth to third grade and a special education endorsement in birth through age 6. The program provides a traditional 4-year degree. A candidate with an Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) specialty is desirable.

Other responsibilities include scholarship and community, and collegial service as needed. This includes communicating regularly with the placement coordinator, licensure officer, and department chair about the progress of early childhood education students; participating in department meetings and department projects; professional development events related to the Vermont Licensure Portfolio and field supervision; field supervision; and teaching additional courses as desired. The teaching load will be at least 12 credit hours per semester.  We value collaboration, social justice and DEI, innovation, and building lasting community partnerships with various early childhood programs. Your work will be appreciated here.

Requirements:

The successful candidate for this position will possess a Doctorate degree in Early Childhood Education or equivalent (or be on a pathway towards completion) in education with demonstrated success in providing quality online instruction. academic commitment to creating inclusive, accessible, and equitable education for all learners, and 3-5 years of relevant educational and/or teacher education experience. Certification in a relevant ECSE endorsement area is desired. A strong commitment to teaching, advising, collegiality, and early and on-going student success is essential.  Excellence in student advisement, both academically and professionally, is required.
