What are the responsibilities and job description for the Natural Sciences Lab Assistant-Student Employment (Workstudy Eligibility Preferred) position at VTSU?
Students must be able to work 4 hours a week during the semester on a regular schedule. The work schedule is set-up each semester by the student and supervisor. Or if summer hours: as agreed upon. Students are responsible for entering their hours worked into the College web-based time-clock system. Students must be reliable, hardworking and interested in the full range of the job duties.
Basic Duties
- Cleaning dirty (but sterile) glassware such as test tubes, flasks, beakers, etc.
- Returning clean glassware to correct rooms and cabinets.
- Re-supplying various lab supplies such as distilled water, sterile test tubes, stains, swabs and pipette tips etc.
- Running used glassware and used micro media through the autoclave.
- Cleaning benches
- Sweeping and washing the greenhouse floor.
- Cleaning and washing the greenhouse windows and windowsills.
- Cleaning and disinfecting pots and trays.
- Weeding and tending plants inside and gardens outside.
- Other tasks as needed.
Advanced Duties:
- Making microbiological media including a wide range of agars and broths.
- Cleaning microscope oculars and lenses.
- Re-potting greenhouse plants.
- Other tasks as needed.
