What are the responsibilities and job description for the Nursing Student Teaching Assistant/Supplemental Instructor-Student Employment Opportunity (Workstudy Eligibilty Not Required) position at VTSU?
Nursing student teaching assistant/supplemental instructors make valuable contributions to VTSU nursing courses and student learning. Each nursing student teaching assistant/supplemental instructors will assist the faculty of the course in the identification of student learning gaps, and will actively participate in the provision of interactive student learning experiences in the classroom and lab. The teaching assistant/supplemental instructors will be surrounded by a support team which may include one or several faculty members. It is the expectation of the faculty member to help you achieve success.
Responsibilities will be determined through discussion between the faculty and student teaching assistant/supplemental instructors. Examples of such responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
• Lead lab or discussion sections.
• Facilitate study sessions or tutorials.
• Help develop course materials.
• Update and/or maintain the course Canvas page with materials approved/created by the instructor.
• Teach a class session during the lecture period, with the careful supervision of the faculty member
• Grade papers, quizzes, and exams if the instructor provides clear guidance and rubrics for grading.
• Assist in other activities related to the course (e.g., making copies, preparation, set-up and clean-up of simulation lab).
• Be alert to students who have been absent, have not submitted assignments, and/or otherwise have changed their behavior. Unusual behavior should be reported to the instructor, who may recommend the student to the VTSU-Castleton Support Team.
The nursing student supplemental instructor should meet or exceed the following standards:
• Currently enrolled in the VTSU Department of Nursing
• Recommendation of at least two current nursing faculty members
• Successful completion of any course in which they will provide instruction
• Successful completion of FERPA training through the CITI program.
• Be able to commit to the schedule as mutually agreed upon by faculty/student supplemental instructor
• Be honest, self-directed, possess initiative, display good judgment and a positive attitude in daily activities
• Have the ability to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in written work
• Be able to work cooperatively with faculty, staff, students, teaching assistants and other student supplemental instructors
• Be able to carry out the functions of this job without risk of harm to the health and safety of self and others
• Mastery of Microsoft Office/Outlook and educational technology
