What are the responsibilities and job description for the Safe Ride Driver/Ride Along - Student Employment Opportunity ( Workstudy Eligibility Not Required) position at VTSU?
Vermont State University- Castleton
Student Government Association presents:
Safe Rides Rules and Procedures
Purpose
This document’s purpose is to outline the policies and procedures to be followed by the Ride Alongs and drivers to ensure a safe, yet enjoyable time for those who use the Safe Rides service. A fleet license is required for the driver and encouraged for the ride along.
Basic Operations
The Ride Along and Driver should arrive at Campus Safety at approximately 9:45 P.M. to check-in and fill out the basic information on the logbook, which will be described in the appropriate section.
After Ride Alongs have read and signed the Safe Rides Rules and Procedures they need to ask Campus Safety for the Safe Rides vests. In addition, they also need to ask for the Mag-Lite flashlight, which will aid the checking of bags process.
At 10:00 P.M. the driver will begin to pick up and drop off passengers within a 7-minute radius of the Campus. Drivers are not allowed to pick up or drop passengers in Rutland. At each stop the Ride Alongs will update the log with the necessary information. The service will be open until 2:00 A.M. but pickups should stop at 1:55 A.M. to allow for the last passengers to be dropped off.
Ride-Alongs
It is advised when the Clubs/Classes send Ride Alongs a week in advance to the SGA Vice President, they also send the Ride Alongs phone numbers in case there is an issue.
There will always be a Ride Along in the Safe Ride Vehicle while it is in operation. Only Certified Ride Alongs who have completed SGA Safe Rides Training are able to work for safe ride.
Ride Alongs must not be under the influence of any form of alcohol, drugs, etc. Ride along is in charge of checking bags and is in charge of the Safe Rides log. There should never be more than one Ride Along as this takes away the number of seats open to passengers. Ride Alongs are responsible for maintaining a legal number of passengers on the vehicle. There must be a seatbelt for every passenger on the vehicle. The number of passengers including the driver and ride along must never be greater than the number of seatbelts available in the vehicle. This limit should not be exceeded. Ride Along must communicate and cooperate with Drivers to ensure proper operation of the service. Ride Along must sit beside the driver in the front passenger seat.
Ride Alongs are responsible for checking bags and passengers one at a time for alcohol, open containers, and other prohibited items. This means that the Ride Along checking bags with the aid of the flashlight needs to ask passengers to open their bags, purse, coats etc. and have them show you that there is no alcohol and/or contraband inside. As a Ride Along you DO NOT have the right to reach into someone else’s property to examine it. This does not mean they need to remove their possessions from their property. Just have the passenger put their hand inside the bag and look inside to see if you can see alcohol and/or contraband. This process might take a minute or two per passenger and you need to have them open up each section to examine. It is the Ride Along's responsibility to monitor the volume of the radio and keep it at a reasonable level, as well as to keep the temperature of the bus reasonable. Drivers should not blast the heat and overly warm the bus.
No alcohol of any kind or open containers is allowed on the shuttle. Ride Alongs will ensure that riders get in the vehicle one at a time. Once the safe ride vehicle has stopped at a Safe Rides stop the ride along will stand in front of the door checking passengers and bags one by one before allowing them to enter the vehicle. Again, Ride Alongs are also required to wear the Safe Rides vests.
Ride Alongs have the authority to deny people entry onto the shuttle or remove them from the shuttle for the following three reasons: The maximum capacity of the vehicle has been reached, the person possesses open beverages or alcohol of any kind and refuses to get rid of them, or the person is uncooperative, violent, or deemed a threat.
