Position Summary :
The Machine Shop Estimator will play a critical role in reviewing incoming Requests for Quotes (RFQs) from both new and existing customers, producing accurate cost estimates, and driving sales. This individual will work closely with the sales, production, and engineering teams to ensure quotes reflect the scope of work, material requirements, and labor considerations, while ensuring customer satisfaction and competitive pricing. The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, have strong communication skills, and possess a deep understanding of machining processes. In addition, the Estimator will support the General Manager and shop team by assisting in workflow planning, vendor relations, and training efforts to optimize productivity.
Key Responsibilities :
RFQ Review & Estimating :
Review and evaluate incoming RFQs from customers, ensuring technical specifications, project scope, drawings, and material requirements are thoroughly analyzed.
Develop accurate cost estimates for machining projects, considering labor, material, tooling, and overhead, and ensure quotes are competitive while maintaining profitability.
Generate estimates and process related material and tooling purchases, ensuring timely and accurate order fulfillment.
Customer & Vendor Communication :
Act as a key point of contact for customer inquiries, providing status updates and assisting with any order-related questions.
Coordinate with vendors to procure necessary raw materials and components for machining projects, maintaining a positive working relationship with suppliers.
Communicate with customers and vendors to clarify technical details and ensure satisfaction throughout the process.
Production Planning & Shop Support :
Adjust quoted delivery dates as needed, based on data from the General Manager, to maintain an optimal flow of work in the pipeline.
Participate in production meetings to review work schedules and ensure on-time delivery of projects.
Monitor shop performance, conducting job cost reviews and reporting progress to the General Manager.
Assist machinists on the shop floor with routed work, troubleshooting issues, and reinforcing best practices related to production and the QMS process.
Provide guidance and training to junior employees to support skill development and efficient workflows.
Technical & Programming Support :
For complex jobs, create CNC programs, design fixtures, and suggest tooling for optimal production.
Provide support for programming CNCs and other machines as needed, including prototype work and production runs.
Assist in upgrading MasterCam and Windows on shop floor computers, collaborating with the IT subcontractor for technical support.
Lean Practices & Continuous Improvement :
Support lean manufacturing practices by identifying and testing improvements, helping ensure inventory processing accuracy in the ERP system.
Stay informed on trends in manufacturing technology (machinery, tooling, software) and consult with the owners on potential productivity improvements.
Participate in ongoing improvement efforts and provide solutions to streamline work flow, enhance production efficiency, and support company growth.
Documentation & Reporting :
Maintain accurate records in JobBoss and ensure repeat jobs and issues are documented for continuous improvement.
Participate in weekly production meetings and monthly management meetings to review performance and suggest improvements.
Education and Experience Requirements :
High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree or higher in mechanical engineering, manufacturing, or a related field preferred.
3-5 years of experience in a machine shop environment, including experience in cost estimating, production planning, or manufacturing sales.
Strong understanding of machining processes, materials, and tooling is essential.
Must-Have Skills :
Estimating & Pricing : Expertise in creating accurate cost estimates for custom machining projects, including materials, labor, tooling, and overhead.
Technical Knowledge : Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, CAD models, and technical specifications.
Customer & Vendor Relations : Excellent communication skills, with the ability to maintain positive relationships with customers and vendors.
Production Support : Understanding of job planning, work routing, and shop performance optimization.
Software Proficiency : Experience with ERP / MRP systems (JobBOSS, NetSuite, or similar), Microsoft Office Suite, and CAD software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD).
CNC Programming : Ability to program CNCs for complex jobs and provide technical guidance on the shop floor.
Desired Skills :
Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma principles.
Experience with MasterCam, Windows, and shop floor computer systems.
Experience with purchasing, inventory management, and vendor negotiation.
Physical Requirements :
Ability to sit or stand for prolonged periods of time throughout the workday.
Ability to type on a keyboard and operate a personal computer.
Measures of Performance :
80% of customer quotes are produced within 48 hours of request.
Demonstrates proficiency in JobBoss and consistently follows changes.
Ensures issues are resolved and information is recorded for repeat work in JobBoss.

Stays current with trade-related advances and productivity improvements.
