POSITION TITLE : Shelter Veterinarian
SCHEDULE : Flexible Schedule (40 hours)
Our client is seeking a full-time veterinarian proficient in both internal medicine and surgical procedures. The ideal candidate is eager to help homeless animals get a second chance to have a loving family. The veterinarian conducts high volume, high-quality medical care for shelter animals. Surgical proficiency requirements include but are not limited to spay / neuter, mass removals, eye enucleations, and limb amputations. The attending veterinarian will also oversee treatment plans for various medical conditions while working within a fast paced, high-volume setting. They are responsible for the overall health of all animals and work closely with the Clinic Manager to carry out medical care. The Veterinarian ensures all animals receive humane medical treatment throughout their time at the clinic or shelter and will work closely with the management team every step of the way.
Job Description
- Perform surgeries and assist in surgeries that can be performed in-house.
- Manage ongoing cases daily and weekly and work with the Clinic Manager to ensure no cases fall through the cracks.
- Direct Clinic Manager in overseeing all disease specific wards (parvo & distemper) ensuring protocols.
- Must perform physical examinations and diagnostic / medical procedures in a way that delivers the highest quality care while minimizing patient stress and discomfort. Must be able to explain physical examination findings and communicate to the staff a diagnosis of the animal's problems and must generate a treatment plan.
- Guide the evaluation and practice of shelter medical protocols that provide the best care for all SAPA animals.
- Coach the medical team and SAPA staff about disease prevention and ensure that medical plans are understood and executed.
- Work to update old procedures and keep SAPA! on the forefront of low-cost treatment.
- Assist organization in conserving funds and finding new opportunities to seek additional funds and in-kind donations.
- With the Clinic Manager to oversee the shelter dispensary and inventory while complying with DEA requirements. In addition, work closely with the Clinic Manager on ordering and inventory management protocols.
- Ensure all controlled substances are stored and logged in accordance with DEA regulations.
- Consult with other veterinarians or specialists on cases requiring more in-depth attention.
- Consult and perform humane euthanasia at the shelter as appropriate.
- Answer emails and phone calls as needed.
- Other duties as needed.
