- Formative evaluations throughout the school year as per WCS Performance and Assessment Procedures.
- Annual summative evaluation prior to July 1.
Purpose of the Position:
Responsible of the overall maintenance and cleanliness of the building to which the employee is assigned.
Minimum Requirements: The following are the qualifications and minimum requirements necessary for a person to perform this job.
- Must be team oriented and able to effectively deal with people.
- Must have good communication skills.
- Must be willing to work various shifts or be called out after hours.
- Candidates are subject to criminal background checks as well as periodic checks of their driver’s license.
Essential Functions of the Position: The following functions have been determined by Wa-Nee Community Schools to be essential to the successful performance of this position.
- Clean and sanitize restrooms using established practices and procedure.
- Clean, dust, and wipe furniture; sweep, mop, or vacuum floors; empty/clean wastebaskets and trash containers; replace light bulbs; refill restroom dispensers.
- Assist with the setup of facilities for meetings, classrooms, conferences, events, etc.
- Strip, clean, buff and apply floor sealer and floor finish to hard surface floors, vacuum, and shampoo carpets.
- Use and maintain assigned power equipment and hand tools, buffers, auto scrubbers, extractors, high pressure washers, high speed buffers and vacuums, brooms, mops, and squeegees for the cleaning and general maintenance of floors, walls, carpets, furniture, etc.
- Wash walls and equipment; use ladders when required in work assignments.
- Lock and unlock assigned buildings: secure building when facilities are not in use checking for unlocked doors and windows, report any unauthorized occupants, turn off lights.
- Provide grounds keeping services, such as landscaping and snow and ice removal from drives and sidewalks as needed.
- Follow instructions regarding the use of chemicals and supplies. Use as directed.
- Perform cleaning and related activities such as removing snow or debris from sidewalks and stairs in areas immediately around their assigned building using hand-operated tools or small power equipment.
- Move furniture, equipment, supplies and tools on an incidental basis.
- Wash accessible interior and exterior windows. Clean blinds. Launder cleaning rags and dust mops.
- Attend to emergencies when necessary.
- Inform Head Custodian when a Maintenance Department work order is needed.
- Assist in the instruction and supervision of student help.
- Support and enforce all school policies and governmental regulations such as OSHA/IOSHA rules, school health and safety regulations and guidelines, etc.
- Support and enforce policies established by the Director of Buildings and Grounds and the building principal.
Secondary Functions of the Position: The following functions, while important and necessary to the position, have been determined by Wa-Nee Community Schools to be marginal to the successful performance of this position.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as needed or as directed by the Head Custodian, Director of Buildings and Grounds, or Building Principal.
Knowledge of:
- Policies, procedures and functions of Wa-Nee Community Schools Board of Trustees and the Indiana Department of Education
Ability to:
- Use independent judgment and initiative in making sound decisions and in developing solutions to problems.
- Make independent decisions in accordance with established policies and procedures.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the community.
Equipment Used:
- Cleaning and mechanical tools and equipment.

Physical Demands:
- Must be able to sit and/or stand for long periods of time.
- Must be able to stoop, kneel or crouch.
- Must be able to hear and speak clearly.
- Must be able to lift items of 50 lbs. regularly/100 lbs. occasionally.
