Wabanaki Public Health & Wellness (WPHW) is growing, and we are excited to be adding new people to our team!  If you value inclusivity, balance, and cultural centeredness and have a true passion for serving others, you may be a great fit for our team!  WPHW is a non-profit organization that serves four federally recognized tribes located in five communities:  the Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians, the Aroostook Band of Mi'kmaq, the Passamaquoddy Tribe at Indian Township, the Passamaquoddy Tribe at Pleasant Point, and the Penobscot Nation.  Wabanaki traditions, language, and culture guide our approach and describe the ways we live in harmony with each other and the land we collectively share.  Services are available to community members living on and off-reservation across the State of Maine.

Position Summary:

The Wabanaki Youth and Cultural Center (WYCC) Manager is responsible for the oversight of the WYCC in Bangor, ME.  This role includes the planning, development, and coordination of programming to provide opportunities for community to engage in ceremony to help build resilience, and strengthen positive health outcomes, cultural identity, and protective factors.  


Duties and Responsibilities:

WYCC Construction Projects: 

  • Provide assistance to the Director of Faculties on addressing construction project needs.  Have a good understanding of WYCC vision and work to ensure construction plans and projects met this vision.   
  • Provide assistance with project management and help oversee the deliverables for construction projects to ensure requirements are being met.
  • Assist with the communication of construction projects to ensure awareness of activities and efforts.

WYCC Programming 

  •  Create and implement the WYCC strategic plan, in partnership with WPHW Leadership. 
  • Work with WPHW Leadership to develop WYCC program; lead grant writing efforts to fund programming.
  •  Assist with the development, coordination, and design of WYCC programming for community members and others to engage in Wabanaki culture.  
  • Assist with the development, coordination, and planning of WYCC-led community events that help to increase a sense of community and connection.
  • Ensure appropriate management and procurement of contracts, program supplies, and inventory for WYCC. 
  • Contribute to WPHW’s website and social media initiatives, participate in outreach activities, assist with other programming as needed, and participate in WPHW planning and visioning.  
  • Attend trainings and engage in professional development opportunities that align with the WYCC Program.

Center Management & Staff Supervision 

  • Work with staff on the monitoring and managing the collection of detailed weekly summary reports of all activities that align with the WYCC strategic plan.  
  • Hire WYCC staff; create detailed staff work plan and ensure programmatic deliverables are successfully completed.
  • Oversee all WYCC grants, and other programmatic reports are completed on time. 
  • Work with Finance and Operations teams to develop WYCC budget and staffing plan, and work with the team to ensure the appropriate management of available funds; determine future funding needs and develop a funding plan to address needs.
  • Collaborate and contribute to evaluation discussion and strategies.
  • Lead grant reporting and contract monitoring. 
  • Provide assistance with fundraising needs for WYCC, as needed, in partnership with WPHW Leadership. 
  • Ensure communication with staff to ensure they are aware of expectations and communicate with WCCC management team, WPHW staff and leadership to ensure awareness of WYCC activities and events.

Oher Duties

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, public health, business administration, communications, or closely related field  
  • Experience working in Tribal populations 
  •  Experience with indigenous cultural practices 
  •  At least 10 years of related job experience

    Skills and Qualifications Required:

    • Knowledge of the methods, procedures, and policies of WPHW as they pertain to the performance of the essential duties of the position.
    • Has supervisory and team management experience 
    • Knowledge of records management practices and general office administration best practices and procedures. 
    • Knows how to maintain cooperative and effective relationships with tribal partners as well as intra and interdepartmental personnel. 
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality. 
    • Ability to analyze and interpret policies and procedures. 
    • Ability to read and interpret documents such as budgets and procedure manuals. 
    • Proven problem solver who can make clear-headed decisions while under pressure 
    • Ability to analyze and compile large sets of data and present effective reports 
    • Highly experienced with project coordinating and management 
    • Self-motivated and self-sufficient 
    • Proven creative thinker with strong business acuity 
    • Effective manager 
    • Impeccable time management and multi-tasking skills 
    • Business-minded and a strategic planner 
    • Able to successfully organize, lead and direct large teams of people 
    • Possess an encouraging, can-do attitude 
    • To perform this job successfully, an individual should have strong computer skills (Microsoft Office, Outlook, and the Internet). Must be able to learn other computer programs as required by assigned tasks. 
    • Must pass criminal background check.
