Position: Custodial Worker
Department: Administration/Parks
Reports to: Assistant Service Director and/or Parks Supervisor
Status: Part-time, Classified, Non-Exempt
Pay Range: L-2, $21.6121 - $29.2397
Normal Working Hours: Monday – Friday, 6:30 A.M. to 11:30 A.M./Variable, up to 30 hours per week. May include occasional Saturday mornings.

Job Summary: Under the general supervision of the Assistant Service Director and/or Parks Supervisor, is responsible for custodial and basic maintenance duties for City Hall and other City facilities. Although primary focus is City Hall, may work in any City department or facility where such services are required or needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Examples of job responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following duties:

  • Sweeps, vacuums, mops, dusts, shampoos, steam cleans, strips, polishes, buffs, and/or waxes floors, carpets, and furniture.
  • Empties wastebaskets, washing containers as necessary, and replaces with liners, disposing waste using prescribed procedures.
  • Cleans and sanitizes restrooms and replenishes supplies.
  • Cleans spills; cleans and sanitizes drinking fountains, mirrors, walls, fixtures, blinds, and light fixtures.
  • Washes windows, walls, metal, and woodwork.
  • Sweeps sidewalks and picks up litter from around City facilities.
  • Performs minor unskilled and semi-skilled interior building maintenance, including but not limited to painting and changing light bulbs and fluorescent tubes.
  • Inspects and maintains assigned custodial equipment for proper maintenance.
  • Keeps accurate inventory and works with Service Director Administrative Assistant to order necessary supplies.
  • Maintains skills and knowledge in the proper and safe techniques of custodial maintenance and cleaning. Reads and complies with all Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
  • Maintains a record of work completed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of equipment, materials, and supplies used in building and grounds cleaning maintenance.
  • Knowledge of applicable safety practices regarding the use of chemicals, cleaning products, and custodial equipment.
  • Ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule.
  • Ability to lift 25 pounds on a regular basis and 50 pounds or more on an occasional basis.
  • Ability to stand, bend, kneel, reach, squat, and/or climb on a regular basis.
  • Ability to use hands and fingers to handle and control tools, materials, and equipment.
  • Ability to read and understand and follow written and oral communication.
  • Ability to respectfully communicate with City employees and the general public, and to establish effective working relationships.
  • Regular, punctual attendance is required to complete required daily tasks.

Minimum Qualifications for Employment:

  • Possession of a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Any combination of experience, education, and/or training that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential duties and responsibilities.

Preferred Qualifications for Employment:

  • One (1) year of experience as a custodian.

Special Information:

Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a criminal background check, employment reference checks, a physical examination and a pre-employment drug screen. The final applicant must be able to acquire and maintain a LEADS certification and is expected to work in the area of sensitive information and equipment. The final applicant will be required to submit to urinalysis prior to the appointment to test for illegal drug use. An applicant with a positive test will not be appointed to the position.
