Position: General Laborer
Department: Sanitation
Reports to: Sanitation Superintendent
Status: Full-time, Classified, Non-Exempt
Pay Range: L-4, $23.013 - $31.1195
Normal Working Hours: Monday – Friday, 4:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M./Variable. May include occasional weekends.
Job Summary: Under the general supervision of the Sanitation Superintendent, is responsible for seasonal (April 1 – November 30) collection and disposal of yard waste within the City and on residential refuse routes. Performs facility and grounds maintenance, cart maintenance and delivery, and/or other duties as assigned by the Sanitation Superintendent. May be assigned to other City departments, as needed.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Examples of job responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following duties:
- Drives and operates a non-CDL rear-loading refuse truck to collect curbside yard waste from residential customers per the guidelines of the Yard Waste Program within a prescribed amount of time.
- Discards waste as needed to the Medina County Solid Waste District
- Performs grounds maintenance around the Sanitation facility, including but not limited to litter control, mowing grass, weed eating, sweeping, shoveling and/or plowing snow, or other tasks as directed.
- Performs routine maintenance of the Transfer Station and/or assets, including but not limited to mopping, sweeping, painting, washing carts, washing and/or detailing vehicles, or other tasks as directed.
- Performs general department tasks, including but not limited to delivering and picking up sanitation carts, repairing sanitation carts, completing inventory and verification of sanitation carts, or other tasks as directed.
- Serves as back-up for Transfer Station Attendants.
- Learns residential routes and serves as back-up for Solid Waste Collection Vehicle Operator after attaining CDL.
- Drives and operates City-owned vehicles, including but not limited to pick-up trucks, container trucks, or Grapple trucks.
- Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of guidelines of City Yard Waste Program*
- Knowledge of Transfer Station and Sanitation Procedures*
- Knowledge of vehicle operations.
- Knowledge of applicable safety practices regarding the use of mowers, weed-eaters, hand tools, and other general maintenance tools and equipment.
- Ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule.
- Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather.
- Ability to lift 30 pounds on a regular basis and 50 pounds or more on an occasional basis.
- Ability to stand, bend, kneel, reach, squat, and/or climb on a regular basis.
- Ability to use hands and fingers to handle and control tools, materials, and equipment.
- Ability to read and understand and follow written and oral communication.
- Ability to respectfully communicate with the general public and City employees, and to provide excellent customer service.
- Regular, punctual attendance is required to complete required daily tasks.
- Learned after employment.
Minimum Qualifications for Employment:
- Possession of a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Possession of a valid Ohio driver’s license and an acceptable driving record that permits insurability with the City’s insurance carrier. Must possess the ability to earn a Class A CDL within one (1) year of employment (City provides instruction).
- Any combination of experience, education, and/or training that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential duties and responsibilities.
- Submit fingerprints and an annual personal history disclosure to the Ohio Attorney General’s Office.
Preferred Qualifications for Employment:
- Current possession of Class A or B CDL.
Special Information:
Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a criminal background and driving record check, employment reference checks, a physical examination and a pre-employment drug screen. The final applicant will be required to submit to urinalysis prior to the appointment to test for illegal drug use. An applicant with a positive test will not be appointed to the position.
